Capita Spring Break Powder Racers 2022 - 2020 Review by The Good Ride

So the Capita Spring Break Powder Racer was given its own line and comes in different sizes at a reasonable price. The Powder Racer from last year is still kind of around in the Powder line and now it’s called the Powder Drifter. Like the 2020 Powder Drifter, it takes a tapered directional shape, a soft flex and gives it a somewhat centered ride on board. This combo makes for a soft, playful, buttery powder freestyle-ish kind of ride that is really fun.

Update 2023: The Powder Racers 2020 did not change much in 2021 and 2022. It did change for 2023 with camber between the feet and a little more damp flex so this review is only valid for 2020-2022.

How This Review Happened: We had a couple of laps at a frantic manic demo day.

Days: 1
Conditions: Some day-old often tracked out but still pretty decent light fluffy Utah Powder getting up to 1.5-2 feet in some places off-piste.
Riders: James (Size 9, 5’10” 185-195lbs), Peter (Size 8, 5’11” 185lbs)
Boots: Adidas Tactical ADV,
Insoles: Sandsole Custom Insoles,  Footprint Insole Technology Gameghangers Low Profile
Bindings:  Union Strata

Set-Up: 22” Wide. 21 front -6 back. Set all the way back.

Approximate Weight: Feels pretty light and almost as light as the Powder Drifter.

Sizing: Even though the waist width and nose are pretty wide there is a lot of taper in the tail so it isn’t a super wide board like you would think it is. We fit pretty well into the Capita Spring Break Powder Racer 154 with the specs above and we think it’s best to keep it between 8-10 boots as it’s meant to be ridden pretty wide in places. I think you can go a bit wider with the 157 but not too wide.

Flex/Buttering: So flexy and buttery. About the same or maybe even a bit softer than the Powder Drifter. It has that medium-sot flex that can bend really well without breaking and then snap back with loads of pop. It didn’t feel like a 5 out of 10 on snow and felt more like a 3. Stiffness can vary from board to board through but overall it’s really soft in comparison to all other Spring Break boards we’ve tried except the Powder Drifter.

On Snow Feel/Ability Level/Skidded Turns: The Capita Spring Break Powder Racer had that same stable feel that comes from flat to rocker and the profile feels perfect for this board. Very easy to ride, very forgiving and playful.

Edge Hold: Not the best edge hold but grips well enough in soft to medium snow.

Turn Initiation: The Capita Spring Break Powder Racer turns pretty fast for what it is and we could easily turn through tight spots.

Turning Experience/Carving: Not that eventful but doable for sure.

Powder: So for being so tapered and directional, the Capita Spring Break Powder Racer has a very centered feel that surprises you. It takes a little more work on the back leg than the Powder Glider or 161 Tree Hunter or Slush Slasher but feels similar to the Mini Tree Hunter. It still sits on top of the snow in a way that is different than any other board we tried and it’s like there is helium in the core to keep a lot of the board above the snow. At a 22.25″ stance width set all the way back you can get a difference of nose/tail of 7.5″ or 3.75″ back on board giving it some decent directional float but not as much as you often find in this category. That’s what makes it fun though and it feels like it rides more centered than many that are super far back on the tail and

Speed: Not a bomber but ok.

Uneven Terrain: So great to ride a resort all day with. It’s not a board you power over bumps at high speed but it weaves through bumps and does a great job of absorbing all kinds of chatter underfoot. It is very even-tempered and isn’t ever cranky like a 4-year-old after a nap.

Switch:  Kind of doable and although not ideal it is something we could both get used to.

Getting Air: The pop on this, forgiving nature and stable approach make the Capita Spring Break Powder Racer soo much fun to hit natural features.

So for us, it is a tossup between the Powder Racer and Powder Drifter. You have more sizing with the Racer and a much better price but you have a lighter core with the Powder Drifter. Tough call. Both boards are incredibly fun and made both Peter and I think about riding powder differently than you would with your average tapered directional board.
