How This Capita Spring Break Powder Racers Review Happened:

Borrowed this for an extended demo and sent it back.
Size: 157 (In the past I rode the 154 & 157 in the flat to rocker model)
Days: 10+
Conditions: Some Groomers, some good pow and some pretty great PNW pow with the help of Drift Boards & Union Rovers

How It Was Tested

I often compared the Capita Spring Break Powder Racers the same day to other pow boards so I have a more accurate take of it’s float. I put a lot of time on it to make sure I got this in a wide variety of conditions but especially lots of powder.

Approximate Weight

The Capita Spring Break Powder Racers felt pretty light for how much surface area it has. (We don’t put in the exact weight because with wood cores there is no consistency in a boards weight)

Sizing

I found the Capita Spring Break Powder Racers to be very easy to control for my size 9 boots in pow and on groomers. That surprised me but I think it’s because of all the taper the really light construction and deep sidecut. If you look at the specs you would think to size down because there is a lot of surface area. However something about these Spring Break boards defy traditional sizing and didn’t match up as well with the recommended weight range on their site.

I got the 154 in the past but I regretted the purchase. It felt way to small for me. Nick (160lbs, 10 US  & 5’8″) ended up really liking that size. The 157 better matched my specs. I wish they had a 160 and 163 for bigger riders and I would want to try a 160 in waist deep pow. All that being said the 157 would be my choice for groomers and pow.

So bottom line. If in doubt size up with these boards.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for these boards. You can of course go bigger or smaller depending on your riding style and boot’s footprint, but these work best for not turning the board slower than it should be and not having the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag.

157: 9.5-10.5
For weight I would stay well under Capita/Spring Breaks recommended weight ranges. If it comes down to boot size or weight, I would be more cognizant of your weight because this is really easy to turn with smaller boots.

Shape/Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

So the Capita Spring Break Powder Racers is very tapered and very directional but not as set back on board as many with this kind of shape.

The 2023-2024 camber profile is not massive and its mainly between the bindings. It is super easy to skid a turn and not very catchy. It tracks a touch better than when it was flat to rocker but the old model tracked pretty well already. This is a very forgiving ride and it’s super easy to skid a turn.

Flex Personality

You have a mediumish flex with the Capita Spring Break Powder Racers but the unique thing is it just keeps bending. You can flex this a lot further than most boards and it has a lot of snap back. Especially for having such a mellow camber. It has pretty good ollie power.

Buttering is really easy as well.

Uneven Terrain

In softer messy snow I didn’t feel the Capita Spring Break Powder Racers could get a little too bucky for my taste. At least it was easy to control/turn through emerging moguls and it didn’t have that wide board feel underfoot. Overall it’s a little too bucky for my taste but not that bad compared to many other very light/poppy boards.

Edge Hold

Pretty competent but not super grippy edge hold. I could trust it in a hard patch if I wasn’t to committed to my edges.

Speed/Base Glide

Capita has come a long way when it comes to base glide. All their sintered bases are really good these days and are up there with Jones and others that have very good glide. This has the same base as the Powder Gliders and that is really fast.

If you want to bomb the Capita Spring Break Powder Racers is not the best ride. This is a little more cruisy/slashy vs. being a big mountain straight liner.

Turning Experience/Carving

So the Powder Racers is really wide but I was really surprised at how the 157 turned for my size 9 boots in all conditions. It has really quick turn initiation. Sometimes a board like this will turn really easy in pow but become more difficult in groomers. This was pretty consistent for me in all conditions. When you get it on edge it likes to turn tight circles and it is definitely on the turny side. The little bit of camber between the feet helped this carve a ton better than when it was flat to rocker but it still doesn’t light up the world of carving. It does make it a much more competent groomer board. It’s still a pow board first but now it’s a decent groomer board second.

Powder

So there is a lot of great directional float with the Capita Spring Break Powder Racers. With a 23” Stance width you can get 4.125” back from center of board. I ride a 21.5” stance width so I couldn’t get all the way back but I did slide the front foot as far back as I could get it with my Union Atlas. The float was incredible and effortless. I never felt like I was challenging this board even in thigh high powder. If it got super deep I would rather be on the Spring Break Powder Glider 162 but this did fine for a 157 and felt pretty close to the float of the 158 Powder Glider.

Conclusion

Overall, I love the addition of a little camber between the feet but I love that it didn’t really change the float in pow. It really rounds out the ride for those that can’t justify buying a powder only board.
