Summary

The Bataleon Acid BOA runs pretty wide and doesn't wrap super well around the ankle, but I'm super impressed with everything else about this boot. It's to the point I want to try using this as my daily driver. They made a boot their first time around and it seems like they have been making boots for years.

How It Was Tested:

After demoing the Bataleon Acid BOA, I liked it so much that I asked to keep them. I only do this with favorites.

I was not paid to do this review, and it comes from an honest, objective perspective with no brand oversight.

Weight

2.4 lbs per foot. That is more on the heavy side. Compared to my Ride Deadbolts, at 2.0 lbs per foot, I really feel a difference. If you hike a lot, it’s something to think about, as 1lb of weight on your foot equals 6 lbs on the back, so it makes sense.

Fit

Bataleon Acid BOA - Fit
Bataleon Acid BOA – Fit

The Bataleon Acid BOA was a little long for my size 9 boots, especially with the very thin insert that it comes with. When I put in my Footprint Insoles, it raised my foot, and it fit better in the boot. That doesn’t always happen, but with the Acid BOA, it did. This is a demo model.

This is a wide boot; for once, I felt it was too wide on my foot below the ankle. I needed to tighten the lower BOA a bit more than usual. There is also a lot of room for a high instep.

I’d like to see how it fits in production. If it fits the same in production, I’d like to try the size 8.5.

Adjustability/Heel Hold

Double BOA Adjustability
Bataleon Acid BOA – Adjustability

I love the separate upper and lower BOAs. The single Velcro side cuff works well once the liner packs in a bit, but it’s not easy when you first get it. I don’t like the liner tightener because the cinch strap doesn’t tighten or loosen easily.

I like the stretchy material at the top of the boot because it doesn’t choke my calves and cause them to cramp.

I don’t feel this locks in the heel well unless you have a high instep. It’s pretty easy off and about the same as most double BOA boots.

Flex/ Response

Bataleon Acid BOA - Flex
Bataleon Acid BOA – Flex

The Bataleon Acid BOA’s flex rating is 6, but it is a 7 on the catalog. Whatever it is, I like it. There is an easier flex around the ankle, but on the way, the top of the boot wraps around my shin, giving it a lot of response up top. So, if you pair this with supportive ankle straps, it adds response and less response with less supportive ankle straps.

Flex Retention/Construction

The Bataleon Acid BOA’s construction is very well thought out. With the articulating cuff, strong plastic backstay, and really well-built material on the outer shell, you have a boot that should last a long time. In the 10+ days, I didn’t feel the flex diminish at all. Only the liner packed in a little better.

Shock Absorption

Shock Absorption
Bataleon Acid BOA – Shock Absorption

I really like this shock absorption. The Bataleon Acid BOA absorbs great shock without being too soft and cushy. Some don’t like a shock-absorbent boot because it reduces board feel and response. It has a very thick sole, which seems to help reduce that mushy feeling.

Traction

Vibram Sole
Bataleon Acid BOA – Traction

Thick Vibram soles like this are excellent for any kind of terrain. I always feel confident hiking in precarious spots or skating in an icy lift line with Vibram. Their rubber does really well in the cold but is also great in the spring when it’s warmer.

Reduced Footprint

Bataleon Acid BOA - Reduced Footprint
Bataleon Acid BOA – Footprint

The Bataleon Acid BOA isn’t super-reduced in footprint, but it’s not bad. My size 9 is about 2mm longer than my size 9 Ride Deadbolt, which is about 3mm longer than a size 9 Burton. If an 8.5 fits more like a true size 9, then this should be a much smaller size 9 Burton. I’ll know more later.

Conclusion

Overall, I really enjoyed the Bataleon Acid BOA boot. It’s a great first go and a boot I’m very seriously considering using as my daily driver.
