Smith Scout Helmet Review by The Good Ride
A Detailed Breakdown of how the Smith Scout Helmet Wears and Rides
How the Smith Scout Was Tested
I bought the Smith Scout to compare to the Method but ended up keeping it for cold stormy days.
Size: Medium
Days: Many and many more to come.
Conditions: Snow, Rain, Sun, and a lot of conditions inbound and an early morning slackountry time with Drift Boards & Union Rovers
Riders: James 57cm Head
Jacket: Jones Mtn Surf Anorak, Skyline Fuse Jacket, Jones Shralpinist Stretch Jacket
Pant: Jones Mountain Surf Bib, Jones Shralpinist Stretch Bib, Burton AK Gore-Tex Pro 3L Hover Pant
Goggle: Smith 4D Mag
Gloves: Burton AK Clutch Mitt, Burton AK Tech Leather Glove, Drop Tahoma Mitt,
Weight
It weighs 1.2 lbs. The Scout does feel heavy coming off the super light Method, but compared to most, it’s pretty average.
Fit & Goggle Compatability
I felt the Smith Scout fit my head well, and the elastic bands in the back of the helmet did a good enough job. I would prefer BOA, though. It has a bigger profile than Vantage and Method.
Warmth/Venting
The Smith Scout runs warmer than the Method, and it’s a better helmet for those who see colder days. The brim that runs over the goggles is great to have, and I think that’s the one thing that makes the Method the perfect helmet. In late spring, I just couldn’t wear the Scout anymore, especially because I run warm.
The Venting runs through the helmet from front to the back but doesn’t feel as effective as the Method and definitely not the heavily vented Vantage.
Audio Compatability
All Smith Helmets work well with my trusty Audio Tech ODT CHIPs and fit really well in the ear pads. I prefer these over Smith/Alek earbuds.
Ear Pads
The Smith Scout ear pads are just like every other and are easily removable for those who want to wear a beany underneath. The elastic straps in the back are also removable.
Chin Strap
It’s just like all Smith helmets and works really well.
Final Thoughts
I wasn’t going to keep the Smith Scout. I was going to test it and sell it or give it to a friend if I didn’t fall on it. Instead I found it a great helmet for stormy or colder days. If Smith makes a helmet like the Method but with a brim like the Scout I’d go for that though.
