Positives

  • Lighter and Poppier than the Mercury
  • Forgiving
  • Faster than the Mercury

Negatives

  • Not as Poppy as the Mega Death or Indoor Survival
  • Pretty Expensive
  • Bucks a lot in soft uneven snow

Summary

The Capita Mega Merc is pretty expensive but offers a more dynamic, lively feel without sacrificing dampness compared to the regular Mercury.

Update 2025: Capita is always making minor tweaks, and for 2025, it has a more durable top sheet, but the ride is still very much the same as the previous model I tried.

Capita Mega Merc Written Review Review by The Good Ride

An Un-Paid, Un-Biased Breakdown Of How the Capita Mega Merc Rides And Who It Is For

Capita Mega Merc 2025 Snowboard Review - The Good Ride
Capita Mega Merc 2025 Snowboard Review – The Good Ride

How The Capita Mega Merc Was Tested:

I borrowed the Capita Mega Merc for an extended demo and sent it back.

Ethics Statement: I was not paid to do this review, and it comes from an honest, objective perspective with no brand oversight. If this review helped, we’d appreciate it if you support objective content by:

Size: 157
Days: 5 for 2025 and 4 for the 2023
Conditions: Between the 2023 and 2025 models I tried in 157 I got these in just about every condition and an early morning slackountry time with Drift Boards & Union Rovers
Riders: James (Size 9, 5’10”, 185-190lbs). I’ve tested and compared 800+ boards
Boots: Ride Deadbolt, Bataleon Acid BOA
Insoles: F.I.T. Gamechangers
Bindings: Union Atlas
Redundancy: Strapins in case boots or bindings break.
Jacket: Jones Mtn Surf Anorak, Skyline Fuse Jacket,
Pant: Jones Mountain Surf Pant, Burton AK Gore-Tex Pro 3L Hover Pant, Skyline Faze Pant
Helmet: Smith Method, Smith Scout
Goggle: Smith 4D Mag
Gloves: Burton AK Clutch Mitt, Burton AK Tech Leather Glove, Drop Tahoma Mitt,

James’s Set Up: 21.5” Wide. Stance Angles +18/-9 in pow and +15/-15 on groomers. Close to Reference on groomers and Set all the way back in powder.

Similar Boards We Like (but not the same):

Yes Greats, Stone Message, Yes Basic, Ride TwinPig, Burton Good Company, Capita Mercury, Never Summer Proto Ultra

Approximate Weight

The Capita Mega Mercury felt very light. (We don’t put in the exact weight because, with wood cores, there is no consistency in a board’s weight)

Sizing

Sizing
Sizing

The Capita Mega Merc works best for me in a 157 because it handles my weight better, but the 155 would be a little better for my size nine boots. It’s a little slow edge-to-edge for my boots, but I didn’t like the regular mercury when I tried it in a 155, so It would be similar to the Mega.

Sizing is all about balancing what fits your boot size and your weight for how you like to ride. If your boot is too wide, you can’t turn it; if it’s too narrow, you get the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag. Your weight is a close second to boot size because it determines how the board will feel under your foot.  Height comes in a distant 3rd. Some prefer control, so matching the boot size is the priority. Others prefer dampness over control and like to size up.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for the Capita Mega Mercury boards.
The 157 Mega Merc was good for my 185lbs, but the 155 might be a little better for my size nine boots. This isn’t a super fast turning board, so if you want more responses, go to the next size, which is down from what you would normally do.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for the Capita Mega Merc. You can, of course, go bigger or smaller, but these work best for not turning the board slower than it should be and not having the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag.
153: 8-8.5
155: 8.5-9
157: 9-9.5
159: 9.5-10
161:10-10.5
156w: 10.-11
158w: 11-11.5
160w: 11.5-12

I would stay close to the Capita’s recommended weight ranges. If it comes down to boot size or weight, I would ensure it fits your boot first and then your weight a close second.

Shape

Capita Mega Merc Shape
Capita Mega Merc Shape

The Capita Mega Merc has an almost true twin shape with minimal setback on board, so this feels barely all mtn. It’s closer to a Mountain Freestyle shape vs. All Mountain, like the BSOD.

Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

Capita Mega Merc Camber
Capita Mega Merc Camber

You have a very mellow camber going to just past the inserts and then a lot of rocker. So it’s forgiving, and it also tracks well with one footing and flat basing. We will get to the disadvantages of this mellow camber in turning.

Edge Hold

Edge Hold
Edge Hold

There is a little bump in the middle on each edge that is 1.5mm, so it makes the waist width 3mm wider but also helps with grip. It’s not on par with other disrupted sidecuts, so I wouldn’t trust this as much in hard snow vs. some competitors, but it helps.

Flex Personality

Capita Mega Merc Flex
Capita Mega Merc Flex

Capita Mega Merc Ollie
Capita Mega Merc Ollie

You definitely have a stiffer flex with the Capita Mega Merc vs. the Mercury, and I’ve never felt pop like this from a board with such a mellow camber on an ollie.

Tail Butter
Capita Mega Merc Tail Butter

I thought it would be more challenging to butter, but all this rocker before the nose/tail really helps with leverage on a butter.

Uneven Snow

Capita Mega Merc Uneven
Capita Mega Merc Uneven

It’s not the best, but it’s very good for an ultra-light board. This is where the compromise comes from getting more pop. I found that most Capita boards, except for the BSOD and Kazu buck and bounce around a lot more in soft, uneven snow than many other boards out there. I think it’s just a byproduct of being so poppy. It does a little better than the regular Mercury in soft uneven snow but has moments in hard uneven snow where it’s worse than the Mercury so it evens out overall.

Speed

Capita Mega Merc Straight Line
Capita Mega Merc Straight Line

In good condition, I was pretty impressed with how fast this almost twin shape could go. If you like to straight line on occasion or want to hit big kickers, this will work well.

Base Glide

Base Glide
Capita Mega Merc Base Glide

There is a very vast base with the Capita Mega Merc. It really glides easily. I don’t like all the structure in some conditions, but if you put a lot of wax on this, it will not grab too much. What I mean by this is the record vinyl appearance of the base, which can grab in some conditions, like fins do in the water, but it feels like the board has way too many fins. So it won’t let you turn.

Turning Experience/Carving

Capita Mega Merc Carve
Capita Mega Merc Carve

The turn Initiation is not that quick for this shape and size. It feels medium, whereas most I’ve tried like this feel medium/fast. When I got it on edge, it had a very balanced turning experience, but I noticed that it likes to go straight as if you were tracking into a jump.

So the pop on an ollie is exceptional, but I didn’t feel that spring out of the turn compared to many boards with more camber. The Capita Mega Merc carves well for having so little camber, but it’s not as rewarding as even the almost 1/2 price Indoor Survival. I liked the BSOD and Mega Death better for carving, too.

Powder

Capita Mega Merc in Pow
Capita Mega Merc in Pow

It did well for a board with a pretty centered stance, but it has its limits for sure. This is a good choice for those who like to ride centered in pow and ride switch a lot. If you are considering the Capita Indoor Survival, DOA or Super DOA as a daily driver for pow just as much as groomers the Mega Merc is the better call if you want easier float.

Pow Set Back
Capita Mega Merc Pow Set Back

You don’t want to get the Mega Merc if you would like to set your board back in power.

Switch/Jumps/Pipe/Jibs

Capita Mega Merc Switch
Capita Mega Merc Switch

The capita Mega Merc is a great board for riding Switch, and it’s only a little behind being a true twin. It’s such a great board for side hits as well as kickers of any size in the park. Not ideal for pipe or jibs for how I ride. Just too stiff for jibs and too slow to initiate a turn in the pipe.

Final Thoughts

So I got the Capita Mega Mercury again because I thought the new, more durable top sheet might have changed the ride, but it didn’t. So check the “Past Reviews” tab and watch the other review as well to see the other conditions I rode it in and how it compares to many other Capita boards.

How It Was Tested

The Capita Mega Merc 157 was often compared to the 157 Mercury, 158 YES Basic Uninc, 156 YES Standard Uninc, 156 Capita Indoor Survival and 159 BSOD.

Approximate Weight

The Capita Mega Merc is pretty light. It didn’t feel like the lightest of the super light boads but it was definitely lighter than the Mercury. (We don’t put in the exact weight because with wood cores there is no consistency in a boards weight)

Sizing

The 157 Mega Merc was good for my 185lbs but the 155 might be a little better for my size 9 boots. This isn’t a super fast turning board so if you want more response go to the next size down from what you would normally do.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for the Capita Mega Merc. You can of course go bigger or smaller but these work best for not turning the board slower than it should be and not having the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag.

161:10-10.5
156w: 10.-11
158w: 11-11.5
160w: 11.5-12

For weight I would stay close to Capita’s recommended weight ranges. If it comes down to boot size or weight, I would make sure it fits your boot first and then your weight a close second.

Shape/Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

The Twinish shape of the Capita Mega Merc has a very centered ride and it’s just a touch behind that true twin feel when on reference stance. The sidecut is somewhat directional but it feels closer to a twin than a directional board. You can weight your turns any way you would like.

Capita Mega Merc Camber

The camber profile of the Capita Mega Merc is just like the regular Mercury with camber just past the bindings transitioning into a pretty pronounced rocker before the nose/tail. It is very forgiving but still tracks well one footing and flat basing.

Flex Personality

Capita Mega Merc Flex

There is a very dynamic and lively flex with the Capita Mega Merc and on same day tests this just out popped the Mercury when it came to turning and ollie power. It was still pretty easy to butter as well. Now in comparison to the BSOD and especially the new Indoor Survival the Mega Merc didn’t have the pop they did. I think it might be because the BSOD has flat in the tail to hold on a turn and pop harder from the tail on an ollie. The Indoor Survival only has a little early rise before the tip/tail so it popped like a camber board. However both of these are less forgiving and floaty so it’s a trade off.

Uneven Terrain

I didn’t get to really stress test the Capita Mega Merc in a lot of uneven snow but surprised me at how well it did compared to the boards I tested it against. It does really well for an ultralight and I didn’t really feel much of a difference vs. the Mercury in the conditions I rode.

Speed

The Capita Mega Merc has a sidecut that favors a straight line or two and it wasn’t very chattery when picking up speed. It isn’t a full on bomber but you can see it is designed for the straight lines necessary to get air.

Edge Hold

Capita Mega Merc Edge Hold

The 1.5mm extension’s on each side of the waist (called Death Grip) seems to help with a little more grip and I felt comfortable in harder patches. It isn’t an ice specialist but it’s competent in harder snow.

Turning Experience/Carving

Capita Mega Merc Carving

I’ve never found the Mercury or this Mega Merc to turn quickly. I always liked pairing it up with more responsive bindings to get it to turn faster.

The overall turning experience is a little more on the straight line side of turny but it is still pretty balanced. It doesn’t fight you on an across the groomer carve or a circle carve. Narrower down the line turns are very doable and where the Mega Merc shines is those straight lines into a kicker.

So the modest camber is felt when turning the Mega Merc. It is fun but it didn’t have the drive out of the turn like all the other boards I tested it against. It was a little better than the Mercury but both were a little behind the group. They all have a little more to a lot more spring out of the turn.

Powder

Capita Mega Merc In Pow

The extra rocker before the nose/tail helps with riding centered on pow days. If you want to set it back and get a little extra directional float the Mega Merc is pretty good. That being said there are better boards when it comes to getting more set back on board. For example, the Mega Merc, with a 22.75” stance width, has a -1.625” set back from center of board. Many all mountain boards can get up to 2.25” or more and have a narrower stance width. It is still better than most centered stance twins though.

Switch/Pipe/Jumps

Very doable switch and it’s just a little behind a true twin. The Capita Mega Merc isn’t my ideal pipe board because I like something that turns a little faster. So if you want to get air this is a great board for that. If like to get air but don’t get that far up in the air (like me) this works fine. If you like to go big this works fine too.

Conclusion

So overall, the Capita Mega Merc is an expensive but much more lively version of the Mercury. Neither are super damp boards, but the great thing is that I didn’t feel like I sacrificed any dampness in comparison to Mercury.
