How This Review Happened:  We borrowed this for an extended demo and then returned it.

Size: 155
Days: 3
Conditions: Pretty good mid-winter snow. Some leftover powder, some great groomers n such.
Riders: James (Size 9, 5’10” 185-195lbs)
Boots: Adidas Tactical ADV
Insoles:  Footprint Insole Technology Gameghangers Low Profile
Bindings: Union Atlas, Union Strata, Union Superpro (we only suggest full size disc bindings like the Atlas though)

Set-Up:  22” wide,15 front -15 back, Centered.

Approximate Weight: Feels on the light side of medium but not as light as the Basic Decade. It is much damper and durable though.

Sizing: I felt like my specs were between the 155 and 158. The 155 was more fun to turn but the 158 would probably feel more damp/fun at higher speeds.

Flex/Buttering: There is a pretty medium flex here with the Yes Globe Not So Basic and the model we rode is far from being a 9 out of 10 like Yes says. Since YES moved to SWS a few years back now, the flex is softer and it’s not like it was when they were at GST. It is pretty easy to butter in the tip/tail but still has a good bit of pop and return out of it.

On Snow Feel/Ability Level/Skidded Turns: The hybrid camber profile (camrock) provides a really stable forgiving ride that works for most riders at almost any ability level. Even a beginner with a fat wallet could swing this and he might never get bored of it. We have found though that the Under-Bite tech which is a little indention at each binding can feel a little more catchy when you get off your game spinning or playing around than mid-bite (indentions towards the waist) but it’s still light years more forgiving to skid your turns than older camber. In comparison to the rest of the industry, the Globe feels like it has a flex that is more like a 7 than a 9 but in the tip/tail, it still is very easy to butter and that feels more like a 5. Ours felt like it has a little more pop than the average Yes board but wood can create inconsistencies in camber height and pop from board to board.

Edge Hold: Really solid grip that is almost up there with full-on Magnetraction but not quite as grabby in soft snow.

Turn Initiation: When I came off the Yes Ghost and got on this it felt like someone took two large weights off my feet. The Yes Globe Not So Basic just Jammed edge to edge and it’s the kind of board I want when I’m in tight spots. It would be the same thing if I got off the YES Standard and then got on this. If you like lightning quick turn initiation then this is a top candidate.

Turning Experience/Carving: The moderate camber underfoot doesn’t provide a super amount of spring out of the turn but it is far from being incompetent when it comes to enjoying moderate turns to really laying it over. It is a trade-off with the Yes Yes Globe Not So Basic between being forgiving and springy powerful out of a turn. It’s super hard to do both. Still, the quick turn initiation really starts it off right and the board sprang well into the turn and kept the fun factor up throughout.

Powder: So the Yes Yes Globe Not So Basic has the same great slam back inserts as the Basic Decade so it floats way better than you would think for its shape. Set all the way back at a 22″ stance width the difference between the nose and tail to the insert is 4.5″ making the setback on board from the center 2.25″.  That is a lot of directional float for an all-mountain board and it borders on being as far back on board as some Freeride boards. I didn’t get the NSB out in powder but from riding this shape from other models in powder that this will provide pretty easy directional float.

Speed: Here is the huge upswing with the Yes Yes Globe Not So Basic compared to the Basic Decade. It just has a much more damp mountain feel. The more I rode the Basic Decade in harder snow the less I liked it. Conditions that were firm but fair and friendly for bombing on other boards weren’t as good on this. Unfortunately, that was at the end of the year and it was almost too late to update the review. I could feel how much more damp the Basic Globe was compared to my Basic Decade for sure.

Uneven Terrain: The Basic Decade could do ok but really started to buck around in uneven snow. Especially in harder uneven snow the Basic Decade started to fall apart.  It moved quickly through the bumps on messy snow days though.  The Yes Yes Globe Not So Basic felt soo much better in uneven snow and it’s a great all-day resort rider.

Switch: This is a true twin and the only thing that makes us call this a directional twin is the setback inserts. It’s practically perfect either way you take it.

Jumps: While the Basic Decade had more energy underfoot compared to the Basic Globe it’s not enough to make this a deal-breaker.  This is on the poppy side for YES and its a good board for those that like to go big without being unforgiving for those, like us, that go small to medium.

Jibbing: doable but not ideal. Keep it simple and basic if you aren’t a strong jibber.

Pipe: What a great pipe board. The only thing that some expert pipe rippers might miss is the extra camber to drive them from wall to wall harder and give them more pop off the top. For the rest of us mortals, it rips and makes you a better pipe rider.

Overall, the YES Globe Not So Basic is a great one board quiver for those that truly want to try a little of everything and have fun doing it. It only comes in 2 sizes, 155 and 158 so it won’t be for everyone. It will also be in limited stock but if it appeals to you I wouldn’t hesitate.
