Positives

  • Light and Very Poppy
  • Super Fast Base
  • Centered Surfy Big Mtn Feel

Negatives

  • Can Get Bucky In Uneven Snow
  • Very Expensive

Summary

The Offshore Snurfs Up takes a very tapered directional shape but gives it a more centered stance for better big mountain riding. You could easily call it big mountain snowsurf because it's a surfy, pretty tapered shape but with a much more centered traditional freeride stance location on board. This makes it turny and slashy but with lots of tail for big air off-piste. It is light and poppy but not the best in uneven snow. It does have a super fast base as well.

Sizing

Sizing
Offshore Snurfs Up – Sizing

The 157 Offshore Snurfs up fit me well enough for my boot size and height but not as well as I’d like for my weight. The 160 seems like it would be a better all-around fit. It won’t get rid of the chatter I feel at my weight, but it will be better in powder, better for turning but still won’t feel too big in uneven snow and tree lines.

Sizing is all about balancing what fits your boot size and your weight for how you like to ride. If your boot is too wide, you can’t turn it; if it’s too narrow, you get the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag. Your weight is a close second to boot size because it determines how the board will feel under your foot.  Height comes in a distant 3rd. Some prefer control, so matching the boot size is the priority. Others prefer dampness over control and like to size up.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for these boards.
148: 6-7
154: 7.5-8.5
157: 8.5-9.5
160: 9-10
148w:7.5-8.5
154w:9-10
157w: 10-11
160w: 11-12

I would stay close to the brand’s recommended weight ranges. If it comes down to boot size or weight, I would ensure it fits your boot first but keep it under 180 lbs for the 160 and then below for the lower sizes.

Shape

Shape
Offshore Snurfs Up – Shape

The Offshore Snurfs Up shape is pretty tapered at 20mm and pretty directional, but the stance location on board (not sidecut) is not that far back in relation to the nose/tail. It has a tapered feel but a more centered ride on snow.

Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

Offshore Snurfs Up - Camber
Offshore Snurfs Up – Camber

The directional camber of the Offshore Snurfs Up is pretty decent, but it’s not something that feels locked in/catchy. It has a very stable and pretty forgiving feel underfoot that is consistent in all conditions.  Most ability levels can ride it, but you are not sure you want to spend the money on it until you are advanced to expert and can truly enjoy it.

Edge Hold

Edge Hold
Offshore Snurfs Up – Edge Hold

There is a very good grip in hard snow without having a disrupted sidecut. The edges don’t hold as well in hard, uneven snow just because it bucks a bit.

Flex Personality

Offshore Snurfs Up - Flex

The nose is medium, it’s pretty stiff between the feet and a little stiffer in the tail. It was pretty easy to butter for this flex, and it pops really well on an Ollie. It’s a very lively, energetic board.

Uneven Snow

It does well for this kind of flex in hard micro, bumpy snow, and it’s pretty manageable. When it gets more uneven and hard, it bucks a bit more. It fairs better in softer, thicker, uneven snow but still bucks and bounces a bit. It’s nothing terrible, though, and it’s not a deal breaker, but this lives for better conditions.

Speed

It’s not a board you can get for pointing it, but it can hang on a straight line to make a traverse and open up in clean conditions.

Base Glide

Base Glide

Exceptional. This is there with Gentemstick and Moss, and when well waxed, you need to go first on a traverse.

Turning Experience/Carving

Offshore Snurfs Up - Carve
Offshore Snurfs Up – Carve

Initiating a turn is pretty easy with the 157, and I feel the 160 would also be easy too. When I got it on edge, the balanced sidecut radius and a lot of taper worked together to make it a little more on the turny side. Down-the-line turns are very doable, but it likes quick turns, and across-the-groomer carves best.

The spring out of the turn is pretty special in good snow, and I needed a little more backfoot weight, but not enough to say it’s just for that type of riding style. You can front foot weight your turns well with a more posi stance.

Powder

Offshore Snurfs Up - A Little Pow
Offshore Snurfs Up – A Little Pow

I didn’t get a lot of powder, but Ren, who is also mentioned in the review, did and loves it, especially in medium to steeper angle pow. I would love this if I still rode in Tahoe and Mammoth, but at Mt. Bachelor, it’s not that steep, so I’d prefer a better low-angle pow ride. This has a very surfy slashy feel, but you don’t ride near the tail

Pow Setback
Offshore Snurfs Up – Pow Set Back

There is a decent but not exceptional setback on board for this much taper. With a 22 “stance width, you can get -3.625 back from the center of the board. The Pintail makes it feel more than that, but it’s still a very centered ride for a board like this.

Final Thoughts

Offshore Snurfs Up - Final Thoughts
Offshore Snurfs Up – Final Thoughts

Overall, I liked the dynamic flex, super fast base, and enjoyable turning experience of the Offshore Snurfs Up. Ren, who is a little lighter, shorter, and has a slightly smaller boot size, loves this. I’d love to try more Offshore boards, but it won’t be easy being a small brand from Japan with no presence here in the US that I know of.
