Positives

  • Semi Light and Poppy
  • Super Fast Base
  • Carves Hard
  • Floats Well

Negatives

  • Feels More Technical Than It Looks
  • Not Ideal In Low Angle Pow

Summary

The Nidecker Mosquito is short, somewhat light, and poppy, but its lack of buckiness for this type of board surprised me. It also felt a lot more aggressive and technical than it looks.

An Un-Paid, Un-Biased Breakdown Of The Nidecker Mosquito Snowboard Review by The Good Ride

How the Nidecker Mosquito Rides And Who It Is For

How It Was Tested:

I borrowed the  Nidecker Mosquito for an extended demo and sent it back

I was not paid to do this review, and this comes from an honest, objective perspective with no brand oversight.

Approximate Weight

The Nidecker Mosquito felt pretty light and much lighter than the 2020 model we tried. It’s not ultralight, but its smaller size sure helps.  (We don’t put in the exact weight because, with wood cores, there is no consistency in a board’s weight)

Sizing

Sizing
Nidecker Mosquito -Sizing

I wanted the 152, but they only had the 148, and I’m glad they did. The 148 was all I needed, and it didn’t feel small for my weight either. I think you could ride this with a boot size similar to my 9s and up to 200 lbs without it feeling off.

Sizing is all about balancing what fits your boot size and your weight for how you like to ride. If your boot is too wide, you can’t turn it; if it’s too narrow, you get the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag. Your weight is a close second to boot size because it determines how the board will feel under your foot. Height comes in a distant 3rd. Some prefer control, so matching the boot size is the priority. Others prefer dampness over control and like to size up.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for these boards.
148: 9-10
152: 10-11

I would stay close to the brand’s recommended weight ranges. If it comes down to boot size or weight, I would ensure it fits your boot first and then your weight a close second.

Shape

Shape
Nidecker Mosquito – Shape

The Nidecker Mosquito doesn’t have a very tapered directional feel for being set back almost to the tail. It doesn’t have that washy feel that some boards this shape do.

Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

Nidecker Mosquito - Camber
Nidecker Mosquito – Camber

The Nidecker Mosquito’s camber is pretty aggressive, even though there is some early rise before the nose. It rises up pretty high and points down at a pretty aggressive angle on the front and back foot. This makes it pretty technical and much more locked in than it looks. This is more for advanced to expert riders who understand the joys and consequences of full camber.

Edge Hold

I was really surprised at how well the Nidecker Mosquito grips hard snow without a disrupted sidecut. It might be the camber pointing down hard near the inserts, the unique cap-like sidewall construction, or the sidecut was designed well for this board. It could be something else or all of what I mentioned. Who Knows?! All I know is I like it in hard snow.

Flex Personality

Nidecker Mosquito - Flex
Nidecker Mosquito – Flex

The flex between the feet is stiff. The tail gives a little easier, and from past the front insert to the nose, it flexes much easier. It’s not super easy to butter off the tail, but it’s doable and pretty easy to butter the nose.

Uneven Snow

Nidecker Mosquito - Uneven Snow
Nidecker Mosquito – Uneven Snow

The Nidecker Mosquito did really well in uneven snow for its size. Shorter/wider/set-back surfy rides usually buck and bounce around, but this didn’t. It’s still not something you can hammer through uneven terrain with as a longer board with the same flex would, but it’s very good for this type of board.

Speed

You don’t get the Nidecker Mosquito to point it, but it can easily be done if needed. I thought it would feel hooky and fight you in a straight line, but it tracked well.

Base Glide

Nidecker Mosquito -Base Glide
Nidecker Mosquito -Base Glide

The Nidecker Mosquito base glide is exceptional. It has a little structure, too, so it’s not a nightmare in spring snow.

Turning Experience/Carving

Nidecker Mosquito -Turning
Nidecker Mosquito -Turning

The Nidecker Mosquito’s turn initiation is medium fast, and when you get on edge and commit to the turn, it keeps going. It’s not a full-on circle carver, but it’s definitely more on the turny side. The camber and poppy construction really springs you out of a turn, and it’s a very satisfying carver.

Powder

Pow Set Back
Nidecker Mosquito – Pow Set Back

I got some pretty good pow, but I forgot to bring my Insta 360 cam in the morning fog when I Drifted before the lifts. It was about 8″ of semi-thick but glorious spring pow, and the Nidecker Mosquito didn’t feel like it was trying. Even with the -7.625″ setback from the center of the board and a 21.25″ stance width, I wouldn’t want to ride this little board in low-angle deep pow.

I could weigh my turns on the front foot easier than I thought, but it is more like center-weighted to back-foot-weighted turns.

Final Thoughts

I had a good time at the Nidecker Mosquito. It isn’t for everyone, but this could work for you if you want a small, powerful setback carver that floats very well in medium to semi-steep angle pow.

Nidecker The Mosquito Past Reviews

Nidecker Mosquito 2020 Snowboard Review

The Nidecker Mosquito is a somewhat heavy, semi-wide, stiff, damp mean little board that doesn’t act like a stealthy but crazy little fucker that sucks your blood. This Mosquito feels more like a mosquito/wasp hybrid that can sting as well.

How This Review Happened: We had a couple of laps on a frantic, manic demo day.
Size: 148
Days:  1
Conditions: There was pretty good left-over powder, 1.5′ to 2′ in some places and some really good groomers.
Riders: James (Size 9, 5’10” 185-195lbs), Peter (Size 8, 5’11” 185lbs)
Boots: Adidas Tactical ADV
InsolesSandsole Custom Insoles,  Footprint Insole Technology Gameghangers Low Profile
Bindings: Salomon Highlander

We tried Similar Boards (but not the same)Gentemstick Spoonfish and Moss Wing Swallow 149, but it feels really different from most of its peers.

Approximate Weight

It feels heavy for its small size, but it is probably the same weight as a 156 with a normal shape.

Sizing

Felt like we had the right size.

Flex/Buttering

It’s a stiff overall board, but I could butter off the tail well. It had some pop to it, but it would be nice if you worked for it to ollie this well.

On Snow Feel/Ability Level/Skidded Turns

We couldn’t find a good flat surface to lay it on, but it seems to have more camber than most Nidecker Camrock boards, and it also has a super long, big nose. You are super far back on the tail, and it steers from there more than it does from the front foot. It doesn’t have that really tapered feel like some shorties like this we tried. It feels small but powerful. Still, it feels stable to semi-locked in underfoot and tracks well when one footing and flat basing. Not a board for intermediates or people who skid their turns.

Edge Hold

Nidecker makes boards with good grip, and this is no exception.

Turn Initiation

It goes very quickly, and it goes where you want it to as you think about it.

Turning Experience/Carving

This little Nidecker Mosquito really carves hard for its size, and it was a lot of fun to turn. It felt like it had a pretty balanced turning radius that can make quick short turns but also not feel lacking on wider turns. If you surf, it feels more like a tri-fin groveler that can surf vertically on smaller waves.

Powder

This little guy floats really well. All that setback on board, along with the big ass nose, really floats well. With so little tail on this guy, I wouldn’t want to get too much air.

Speed

It is fast for how little it is and pretty damp as long as the conditions are smooth.

Uneven Terrain

The Nidecker Mosquito bucks you around less than you would think for a board this size, but it still bucks you around. That’s just what shortboards like this do.

Conclusion

Overall, the Nidecker Mosquito was a pretty unique little ride. It would be really fun in a quiver, but it could also work as a daily driver for carving and powder if you are really into shorter rides.

This Board is great to carve and on pow. It's nimble, super fast from edge to edge and for me the biggest surprise, stable even when i charge. So if you are looking for a short fat freeride board, go for it !
Two remarks to your review: This Board isn't heavy at all, it's only 2.7kg/6lbs, which is light !
The mid-stance setback is already 6cm, so even if you expect a pow day, it doesn't make sense to set it back to the maximum like your rewiewers did.
