Positives

  • Carves Hard
  • Good base for the price point.
  • Dynamic Pop
  • Great Aggressive Mtn Freestyle Ride

Negatives

  • Base has too much structure
  • Not good in powder for a twin
  • Technical/Not For Beginners or Intermediates

Summary

The 2024 Stone Message has mellowed out a little bit flex wise but seems to keep the pop the stiffer model had. It’s hard to find a twin this dynamic and fun to ride at this price point. I had more fun on this than many twins in the 500+ price range.

Stone Message 2024 Written Review Review by The Good Ride

Welcome to the Stone Message 2024 Snowboard Review from an average rider with extensive but objective board knowledge.

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews and this is our unfiltered opinion. We do make money from the “Where To Buy” links, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average rider’s perspective.

A Breakdown Of How It Rides And Who It Is For

Stone Message Review - The Good Ride

Ethics Statement: This review has zero brand oversight. This is our best effort at an honest, objective review to help you, the consumer.
If this review helped, we’d appreciate it if you:

How This Review Happened:

I liked it so much, I asked to keep it (I only do this with favorites).
Size: 156
Days: 4+ and counting.
Conditions: Great Mid-Winter groomers and varied spring snow.
Riders: James (Size 9, 5’10”, 185-190lbs)
Boots: Ride Torrent, Ride Fuse, Nidecker Rift Lace, Ride Deadbolt, Burton Tourist, Burton Ion
Insoles: F.I.T. Gamechangers
Bindings: Union Atlas
Redundancy: Strapins in case boots or bindings break.
Jacket: Jones Mtn Surf Anorak, Skyline Fuse Jacket, Jones Shralpinist Stretch Jacket,
Pant: Jones Mountain Surf Bib, Jones Shralpinist Stretch Bib,
Helmet: Smith Maze
Goggle: Smith 4D Mag
Gloves: Burton AK Clutch Mitt, Burton AK Tech Leather Glove, Drop Tahoma Mitt,

Similar Boards We Like (but not the same): Never Summer Protosynthesis, Yes Greats, Lib Tech Box Knife, Yes Basic, Ride TwinPig,

James’s Set Up: 21.5” Wide. Sance Angles +18/-3, +18/+3, +24/+6, +27/+9 back, +18/-9, +15/-15. Close to Reference on groomers and Set all the way back in powder.

Approximate Weight

The Stone Message felt pretty normal for this size. (We don’t put in the exact weight because with wood cores, there is no consistency in a board weight)

Sizing

Stone Message Sizing

I thought this would be a touch wide for me, and I guess it is, but I felt very comfortable with this width and never felt like I needed narrower.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for these boards. You can of course, go bigger or smaller depending on your riding style and boot’s footprint, but these work best for not turning the board slower than it should be and not having the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag.
153: 8-9
156: 9.5-10.5
159: 10-11
For weight, I would stay close to the Stone’s recommended weight ranges. It seems fair. If it comes down to boot size or weight, I would make sure it fits your boot first and then your weight a close second.

Shape

You have a true twin here with a centered stance.

Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

Stone Message Camber

This is pretty much full camber. There might be a touch of early rise, but as you can see, there isn’t much, and this has that locked-in full-camber feel. Best for experts and not ideal for beginners. Advanced to expert riders will really appreciate this easy tracking full camber feel though.

Flex Personality

Stone Message Flex

You have a pretty medium flex with the new Stone Message. It has a similar flex between the feet as the older Message but a softer tip/tail. It’s easier to butter, and the pop feels easier to access. I think only a really strong rider would prefer the older Message. I personally felt I could ollie higher with the newer model.

Uneven Terrain

Very competent in all conditions, from hard to soft uneven snow. It’s a great all-day ride.

Edge Hold

There is nothing special going on with the Stone Message sidecut, but it grips very well in hard snow.

Speed

I was pretty impressed with how the sidecut allowed you to go straight and the board’s ability to stay damp at higher speeds. This is great for a straight line into a big kicker.

Base Glide

Stone Message Base Up Close

So I don’t like the structure, but I’m pretty impressed with the base quality/glide at this price point. Most bases are extruded below $400 and this is a nice base you see on $500+ boards. Well done lads!

Turning Experience/Carving

Stone Message Carving

Very quick edge to edge for a 25.8cm waist width for size 9’s. I never felt like I needed this board to get somewhere faster than I needed it to.

So I’m not a park ripper, but I love going out on twins, riding switch, trying to carve switch, and, of course, just carving regular. The Stone Message does this very well and has the sole of an all-mtn to freeride board in a twin. There is a very satisfying spring out of the turn and a pretty balanced turning experience for all kinds of radius turns.

Powder

No thanks. I’ve done Camber twins in Pow so no need to do it again. My cartwheeling days are over. If you rip camber boards then this will be no better or no worse than all those camber boards in the old school days.

Switch/Freestyle/Park

Super easy in each direction. I love riding this switch. I’m no park rider, but I liked carving the walls in the pipe. Jibbing is more for advanced technical riders. They can rip this, but average park riders might find this a little too stiff/lively on technical jibs. The place where this truly shines is big kickers which are beyond my ability level and insurance policy. You can see this is all about the big jump line in the park. It has a sidecut that tracks really well into kickers and a full camber flex that can handle big landings. Shit that I want no part of at my age.

Final Thoughts

So overall, I really like the upgrades to the Stone Message, and this Julian Merken model is a great change-up from the older model. On a personal note these graphics just crack me up as well.

Stone Message Past Reviews

The Stone Message is an old school full camber aggressive/technical kind of ride that isn’t for people who skid their turns. However, all of us had a time on this ride and it brought back a lot of great memories we had from the 2000’s. It’s a great aggressive mountain freestyle ride for those who like to carve reg/switch, get air and ride pipe.

How This Review Happened:  We liked it so much we asked to keep it (we only do this with our favorites)
Size: 156
Days: 5+ and more to come.
Conditions: Some mid-spring conditions with hard snow, some softer snow and lots of in-between depending on the day.

Set-Up22” Wide. 15 front -15 back.  Centered.

Approximate Weight: Feels normal and maybe a touch on the heavy side of normal.

Sizing: The 156 felt just right for my weight and boot size. Great fit. Nick might like the 154 a little better. I think that’s it for their sizing.

Flex/Buttering: The flex is pretty medium/stiff between the feet but it mellows out in the tip/tail just enough to not make it impossible to butter. It takes a heavier rider or a stronger rider to butter this easy but it’s doable for many average riders.

On Snow Feel/Ability Level/Skidded Turns: The Stone Message is pretty locked in and while it’s not super catchy for camber, it’s pretty catchy in comparison to most hybrid shapes out these days. It tracks super well one footing off the chair and when flat basing though. Advanced to expert riders who don’t skid turns is best here.

Edge Hold: Really competent grip and although you do have to dial back your turns a bit in harder snow compared to some disrupted sidecuts out there the Stone Message never takes any confidence out of you.

Turn Initiation: Very quick and springy edge to edge and it just wants to spring you into the next turn. If you like jump turning this is a fun board.

Turning Experience/Carving: The Stone Message is a powerful carver and it has a great turning experience for those that ride duck and keep it centered. Quick, powerful and springy is the best way to describe it.

Powder: Nah…this is only for those old school super technical riders that know how to rip powder on camber from the old days.

Speed: The base had good glide to it and kept it’s speed pretty well. Nothing great but nothing bad either.  The Stone Message

Uneven Terrain: Great for weaving in and out of bumps and not bad when it comes to powering over them as well. It did well with hard microbumpy snow and some soft messy snow. The Stone Message is a good board for those that see crowded resort snow.

Switch: Pretty much perfect either way.

Getting Air/Park: So get a good insurance policy and go big with this…I dare you! It had more than I could ever dream of doing in the park but it didn’t get cranky when I went small on it. The bottom line is the Stone Message can launch. It’s also a great pipe board for those technical park riders. Didn’t really whisper in our ear and say let’s go to the jib park though.

So overall the Stone Message is one really fun camber board that we had a hell of a time on. It just turns soo well for a twin and we couldn’t part with it. It’s now in the quiver and we all can’t wait to spend more time on it.

Stone Message Snowboard Review SKU UPC Model

It has camber, it's a twin and it doesn't turn.

Feb 18, 2022 by Marc
Ability Level: Expert •
Riding Style: Huge trench, expert. •
Days You Ride A Year: 30+ •
Height, Weight And Boot Size (for Boards, Boots & Bindings): 210lbs, 5.8ft, US10~11

Hype: I got this board because I was looking for a true twin that could go fast and bomb, going at it leaving behind huge trenchs. From the review, it seems like it could a decent contender.

Initial feel: This thing is snappy! It's stiff, medium stiff, but still pretty stiff, goes fast, but it just wouldn't turn! It tracked so well in snow it just won't let you turn! I've never rode a board like this. It just sucks so much! As the review said, my base felt like an old vinyl record.

After purchased support: I contacted STONE about this and they sent me a video of someone doing a 1080. They probably didn't understand when I said the board didn't turn. I explained that the board was just not turning on the snow. They replied with "everyone turns on that board and they have no issue. I said I was looking for a solution, since I can't be the only one having this issue and they replied with "You need to ride it more and yuour legs needs to be in better shape, there's nothing else that can be done." I replied with a semi-condescending reply that it almost looked like they were laughing at me with those replies, to which they said "We sold this board worldwide and we have never had a bad review or a return. We'll repeat what we just said, you need to ride it, adjust your bindings and it'll be good." I've since sold the board. I don't know, STONE just doesn't really care?

I have the full transcript in my facebook messages (it's all in french but I can translate the whole thing).

I'm bummed out.

Awesome old school camber twin

Days You Ride A Year: These days only 20-30 •

Having read your review of the Message I just had tog get it! Rad looking, old school camber specs and for only around €300!!
I actually liked it so much I just had tog get another one. So I now have both the 153 and the 156 of the 2020 Message. It is a true carver with the best edgehold I have experienced this far. And it is super-poppy! As it is an old school true camber it is not very forgiving and you have to ride it actively. The more aggressively you ride it, the more fun it is, and the more you will fly!
With US 9 boots and around 75 kgs I prefer the 153 in the park as it feels perfect sizewise, easier to press and get to airborne with. The 156 is still great but for my size it feels a bit too wide and stiff to be the perfect park board for me. It fits better as an all mountain freestyle carver board tog bomb thw whole mountain with. It rides well (for a twin) in pow with setback and turns superquick between the trees.
I think Stone did it right to make the newer Message a little softer as it will be easier to press and play with even with the 156.
I really recommend this board!
