Positives

  • Excellent Pow Float
  • Soft Flex For This Kind of Ride
  • Fun To Carve On Groomers

Negatives

  • Soft Flex For This Kind of Shape

Summary

The Amplid Snommelier is a big, set-back, directional floaty swallowtail that seems less tapered and set-back than it is. Compared to many of its peers, this more centered weight your turns any way you like to feel is pretty unique.

Approximate Weight

The Amplid Snommelier feels pretty normal in weight and a little on the lighter side for this length and width.

(We don’t put in the exact weight because with wood cores, there is no consistency in a boards weight)

Sizing

The Amplid Snommelier is a long and pretty wide board, but it felt like it worked for my specs. You definitely want to ride this bigger than a traditionally sized freeride board.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for the Amplid Snommelier. You can, of course, go bigger or smaller depending on your riding style and boot’s footprint, but these work best for not turning the board slower than it should be and not having the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag.

166: 9-10. It can handle bigger boots, but you want to ride this wider for better float

For weight,, I would stay a little lower than Amplid’s upper weight, which they recommend.

Shape

The Amplid Snommelier is quite set back on board vs the setback on sidecut. You ride this way back towards the tail but yet it feels much more centered on snow than it looks in this review.

Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

The Amplid Snommelier has a decent amount of camber from the tail, leading to a good bit of early rise before the really big nose. It’s more for advanced to expert riders, but a strong intermediate could handle this if they are okay with the possibility of catching an edge here and there. It tracks really well on one footing and flat basing.

Edge Hold

The Amplid Snommelier has a decent grip for its size, and if you see hard snow, it will hold well enough.

Flex Personality

The Amplid Snommelier has a medium flex, which feels pretty soft for a freeride/snowsurf ride. It has a rubbery personality that can keep bending without breaking, and it’s pretty easy to butter.

It’s pretty easy to ollie on this as well.

Uneven Snow

The Amplid Snommelier doesn’t have that Antiphase ultra chatter absorption tech, but it is pretty damp for a mid-flexing ride. As long as you don’t want to hammer at high speed through chunder, it’s fine.

Speed

I could point it with the Amplid Snommelier but Davey felt it was a bit soft and not as satisfying going straight. That’s the 50lb difference there. To a lesser extent, it also has to do with my size 9 US vs. Davey’s size 12 US boots. It isn’t a full-on straight liner, but it has very competent speed for this flex.

Base Glide

The Amplid Snommelier’s base isn’t the fastest, but it’s far from being a slacker. With consistent waxing, it has good glide and a decent amount of structure for varied snow conditions.

Turning Experience/Carving

Edge to edge wasn’t super fast for me and I didn’t feel the taper as much as I thought I would in the trees. Usually boards with this much taper turn faster in pow but this felt pretty consistent from groomers to pow. Yes, it’s a little faster in pow but not a lot faster like most boards with 31mm of taper are.

There is a 9.25m sidecut which isn’t very turny but for some reason it turns a much tighter radius than you would think. It just goes to show there is often much more happening in the boards design than the specs would lead you to believe. It still favors a more big mountain, down the line turn more than an across the groomer or circle carve but it doesn’t fight you if you want to.

The spring out of the turn is very lively and fun, but it doesn’t take a strong rider to access this fun pop-out of a turn either. I could front foot, center, and back foot weight my turns without the tail washing out. That is very unique and very cool because it works with a wider variety of riders.

Powder

So the Amplid Snommelier is an amazing floater. I was in thigh-high power in some places, and it felt like it wasn’t even trying. Despite being more of a big mtn bomber, this floats super well in low-angle powder.

At a 22” stance, you can get 10.865” back from the center of the board. That is massive. Even with this setback, massive taper, and large swallowtail, you feel more centered on board than you are. It’s a very unique feel, but it’s something we felt with almost every Amplid board we rode. So, if you want a back float but a less tapered/set-back feel, this is a great choice.

Final Thoughts

So overall I enjoyed the Amplid Snommelier’s deep pow ability as well as it’s ability to carve up groomers. Some might not enjoy the medium/rubbery flex but others, like me, might really enjoy it.
