A Breakdown Of How The Capita Mega Death Rides And Who Its For

How It Was Tested

I borrowed the Capita Mega Death for an extended demo and sent it back.
Size: 159
Days: 3
Conditions: Good pow in some places and shallow in others.
Riders: James (Size 9, 5’10”, 185-190lbs)

How It Was Tested

I rode the Capita Mega Death on its own but also compared it to the Capita Aeronaut, Kazu, YES Basic Uninc, and Stone Message on the same day.

Approximate Weight

The Capita Mega Death is pretty light for this surface area. (We don’t put in the exact weight because with wood cores, there is no consistency in a board’s weight)

Sizing

I found the Capita Mega Death 159 to be the best size for testing. The 162 would be a little better for my weight but harder to turn and still bucky. The 156 would be better for my boot size, so the 159 is the best compromise for testing.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for the Capita Mega Deaths. You can, of course, go bigger or smaller depending on your riding style and boot’s footprint, but these work best for not turning the board slower than it should be and not having the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag.
* there is a 1.5mm bump on each side of the waist, so subtract about 3mm from the overall waist width when sizing*
156: 9-10
159: 9.5-10.5
162: 10-11
157w: 10.5-11.5
161w: 11-12

For weight, I would stay on the lower end of Capita’s recommended weight ranges because Ultra Light boards like this don’t do as well for heavier riders. If it comes down to boot size or weight, I would pass if you are on the heavy side and have to size down for your boot size.

Shape

The Capita Mega Death has 1mm of taper, but it really isn’t a tapered directional ride. It feels much more centered on board than it looks and only has about 20mm set back on the sidecut.

Camber/On Snow Feel

The Capita Mega Death’s directional camber profile starts with a good bit of early rise before the nose to camber between the feet to flat with a little kick of early rise before the tail. The flat makes the Mega Death feel more locked in than many other all-mtn to freeride capita boards. It’s much more forgiving than full camber but still tracks almost like full camber does one footing and flat basing.

Flex Personality

Medium/stiff between the feet, but the very end of the nose/tail is stiff. The Capita Mega Death can butter ok but it pops super hard. I don’t think they could get any more spring on an ollie for this kind of camber profile. It pops better than many full camber boards.

Uneven Terrain

The Capita Mega Death can get really bucky in soft, messy, uneven snow. It’s a problem with many capita boards, but it’s amplified with this super light poppy construction. Hard micro bumpy snow is doable but far from being super damp. This is a better board for those who often get clean conditions.

Edge Hold

The edge can buck a little in hard, micro-bumpy snow, but it grips rather well in clean, hard snow. It is not a full-on hard snow specialist, though, and you can get better boards for those conditions.

Speed

It’s more than fine for a straight line, but I personally like the BSOD better. It feels more damp at speed. The side cut isn’t full-on straight-line friendly, but it will never fight you if you don’t want to turn.

Base Glide

The Capita Mega Death base is exceptional and has top-notch glide.

Turning Experience/Carving

The Capita Mega Death turned pretty fast for my size 9 US boot, and it wasn’t bad at all initiating a turn. It felt a little quicker than the BSOD. When I got it on edge, the turning experience felt pretty balanced to a touch on the straight-line side. I found the flat in the tail seemed to affect the continuity of the turning radius slightly, but it’s far from a deal breaker. There is a pretty satisfying spring out of the turn, too.

Powder

I found this board to have a less-than-ideal freeride float but a really good overall float for an all-mountain board.

With a 22” stance width set all the way back, you can get -2.375” from the center of the board and -2.5″ if you factor out the pointy aesthetic to the tail. That is good. I think Capita repositioned the setback throughout many directional boards in their line, and hopefully, they did the same for the BSOD. The 2023 BSOD had a 1.875” setback at 22.75”, and I found that not to be as good as some of its all-mtn competitors.

Switch/Pipe/Jumps

Very doable switch. Capita makes all their boards park/freestyle friendly, and this will be decent in the pipe and very good at hitting some kickers.

Conclusion

Overall, I’m more of a BSOD guy, but that is mainly because most ultra-light boards don’t work that well for me. I like the dampness of all the BSOD riding conditions, but I will miss the exceptional base glide and pop the Capita Mega Death provides. Also, as far as an ultra-light board goes, this wasn’t that bad.
