Positives

  • Pops Super Well On an Ollie
  • Lots of Spring Out Of A Turn
  • Very Turny

Negatives

  • Bucks Allot In Uneven Soft Snow
  • Not as good in powder as it looks

Summary

The Capita Aeronaut is one of the more directional rides in their all-mountain-to-freeride line. It's bucky and bouncy in uneven snow, but it sure pops well on an ollie. Update 2025: Other than a very minor upgrade to the base, the Aeronaut did not change for 2025. I rode it again, in a 161, and while it fit me a little better, it wasn't any more damp/less bucky.

A Breakdown Of How It Rides And Who Its For

Capita Aeronaut Snowboard Review - The Good Ride

How This Capita Aeronaut Review Happened:

Borrowed this for an extended demo and sent it back.

James’s Set Up: 21.5” Wide. Sance Angles +18/-3 and set all the way back in pow. +18/-9, and close to the reference on groomers.

How It Was Tested

I often rode this same day as the Mega Death, Kazu, and Navigator. All had the same bindings on. There is no better way to know how a board performs than to test it against others.

Approximate Weight

The Capita Aeronaut felt light, bordering on normal. (We don’t put in the exact weight because with wood cores, there is no consistency in a board’s weight)

Sizing

Capita Aeronaut Snowboard Sizing

After riding the 157 and 161, I felt that it was easy to turn/contron with the 157 and wasn’t much harder in a 161. It’s a narrow board, so it’s not hard to turn for my size 9 boots in any regular size.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes (most important) for the Capita Aeronaut boards. You can, of course, go bigger or smaller depending on your riding style and the boot’s footprint, but these work best to keep the board from turning slower than it should and to avoid the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag.
153: 7.5-8.5
155: 8-9
157: 8.5-9.5
159: 9-10
161: 9.5-10.5

For weight, I would stay at the lower end of the recommended weight settings on Capita’s site. This is a pretty light/poppy ride, and it’s better for lighter riders, but make sure it still fits your boot size correctly.

Shape

Capita Aeronaut Snowboard Shape

The Capita Aeronaut has 5mm of taper but it feels more set back on board than many Capita Boards. It has a very old school all-mountain bordering on freeride shape to it for sure.

Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

Capita Aeronaut Snowboard Camber

The Capita Aeronaut has a lot of camber and only a touch of flat to early rise near the tip/tail. It almost feels like full camber, and it’s pretty technical/catchy. This is far from ideal for beginners or intermediates who often do skid turns. It tracks so well, though.

Flex Personality

Capita Aeronaut Snowboard Flex

The Capita Aeronaut has a pretty mediumish flex, but it wasn’t super easy to butter. That is probably due to all that camber. The

Uneven Terrain

The Capita Aeronaut wasn’t terrible in hard microbumpy snow, but all this pop was hard to handle in softer uneven snow or hard snow with bigger bumps. It really bucked and bounced me around more than I preferred. I was hoping that sizing up might help fix this issue, but the 161 didn’t make it any better. It’s just this board’s lively, poppy flex personality doesn’t respond well to uneven snow in any size. I get from 157, 159, or 161. That’s just the nature of this board.

Edge Hold

The Capita Aeronaut wasn’t bad in the hard patches of snow I came across, but I liked the Death Grip Capita boards better if you see more hard snow.

Speed

The Capita Aeronaut didn’t shine as a board that likes to go straight and fast. It didn’t fight me or feel hooky, but didn’t shine here either.

Base Glide

Capita Aeronaut Snowboard Base Glide

I like the base glide with the Capita Aeronaut and the structure wasn’t over the top. Capita is doing good things with their bases, and they have very good glide to them these days. This doesn’t have as much structure so it has a really good glide to it.

Turning Experience/Carving

You have a very quick turner with the Capita Aeronaut, and when you get the edge committed, it keeps going. This is very easy to across the groomer and circle carve. It’s doable, but not as ideal as boards like the BSOD when it comes to more down-the-line turns and straight lines. You can weight your turns anyway you please, and you don’t get that back foot wash if you front foot weight your turns.

Powder

Capita Aeronaut Snowboard In Pow

So with a 22” stance width, I could set the Capita Aeronaut back -3.25” from the center of the board. That is very good for an all-mountain board, but the lack of early rise and older school surface area just doesn’t float that well. I found this behind the Megadeath and a little behind the Kazu on the same day pow tests despite having a more setback feel on board.

Capita Aeronaut Snowboard Pow Set Back

Switch/Freestyle/Park

I think the Capita Aeronaut rode switch well enough for being a little nose-heavy and tail-light. It’s a great directional jump and pipe board, too.

Final Thoughts

So the Capita Aeronaut is a unique board, and I think a lot of older school riders who want a modern twist on full camber can really appreciate it.
