Days: 2
Conditions: One pretty good pow day and one very deep pow day that was waist deep in some places. On the deep day I got an early morning slackountry time with Drift Boards bindings & Union Rovers
Riders: James (Size 9, 5’10” 185-190lbs)

How It Was Tested

I only rode this on pow days. Had a little bit of time on groomed runs but not a lot. I compared this against the Rome Stale Fish and Korua Uberegg to get an idea of how it rode/compared against other boards.

Approximate Weight

Felt normal to a touch heavy for this size/width.
(We don’t put in the exact weight because with wood cores there is no consistency in a boards weight)

Sizing

The Burton Short Stop was for sure doable for my specs you see above but it wasn’t ideal. I didn’t mind the width but it was hard to flex for my 185lbs. It didn’t feel like its rating at 6/10 and I was definitely on the lower end of the recommended weight range for the 156. I would have liked to try the 150 to see if that had the feel they described. There is a huge bump in length and recommended weight from the 150 to 156 that can be problematic for some. The 156 seems to be really thick and I’ve noticed that with Burton’s boards lately that are rated for 180-260lbs riders. If you are close to my specs but are more like 220-240 the 156 might feel really good.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for these boards. You can of course go bigger or smaller depending on your riding style and boot’s footprint, but these work best for not turning the board slower than it should be and not having the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag.
142: 6-8
150: 8-10
156: 10-11
162: 11-12

For weight I would stay closer to the upper end of Burton’s recommended weight ranges. If it comes down to boot size or weight, I would make sure it fits your boot first and then your weight a close second.

Shape

Tapered and directional but with a centered feel when riding. You ride very set back on board but you are centered on sidecut so the Burton Short Stop has a very unique feel compared to boards like the 3D Fish or Deep Daze or most tapered directional pow rides.

Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

The Burton Short Stop has flat to rocker so you get a very stable feel underfoot one footing and flat basing. It’s pretty forgiving too and not that hard to skid a turn for being so wide.

Flex Personality

So the 156 had a pretty stiff flex but it’s made for 180-260lbs riders. It felt more like an 8 out of 10 for me at 180lbs but for heavier riders the 156 will feel more like a 6 out of 10. The 150 would probably feel more like the flex rating for me. It didn’t wheelie up in powder as easy as I would like and I felt this board a little dead underfoot just because I was too light for this ride.

Uneven Terrain

The Burton Short Stop can ride well in uneven snow and did a great job for being somewhat short and pretty wide.

Edge Hold

Same Burton edge hold that is good but not on the level of some boards out there. If you have icy drops to get to the powder below there are better boards.

Speed

I felt this 156 to be very damp at speed but I’m not sure the 150, which better fits my weight, would straight line as well.

Base Glide

I was expecting better base glide for this price point. It needs high end wax and several waxes to get it going. I could not traverse as far on this as I could with other boards.

Turning Experience/Carving

The Burton Short Stop isn’t really a carver or groomer ride but it’s pretty good for a flat to rocker board. You could have fun carving clean corduroy waiting for a pow run to open.

Powder

So you get the Burton Short Stop for powder and it does very well. I found it not the best for low angle pow riders but it has very easy float.

Even though the stance is centered on board you can still get -8.375” back from center of board at a 23” stance width. That is really far back but you feel like you have more tail than you do. That is good for getting air in the deep stuff.

Final Thoughts

I personally liked the Burton 3D Fish for my style of riding but this isn’t a bad board. It has good appeal for those who fit the spaced out sizing and want that directional float with a centered feel.
