Gentemstick Chaser HP 2020 - 2019 Review by The Good Ride

The Gentemstick Chaser HP is a board we spent lot’s of time on in the past but we got on it again to compare directly against the Chaser for 2020. It isn’t for everyone but if your specs and riding style matches up with what the Chaser likes, you could have a very unique and special experience.

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  We do make money from the “Where To Buy” links, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average riders’ perspective.

Set-Up: 21” Wide. 36 front +12 back. Close to Reference and Set all the way back.

Approximate Weight: Feels pretty light.

Sizing: The Gentemstick Chaser HP seems to be best for lighter riders with boots in the size 8-10 range to avoid toe/heel drag. It worked just right with my size 9 boots but not well with the other lads boots at 11.

Flex/Buttering: The medium to medium stiff flex has lot’s of pop and energy underfoot. It’s easy to butter too….almost too easy off the tail and I think the rocker in the tip and tail make it easier than you would think if you flexed this in a shop.

On Snow Feel/Ability Level/Skidded Turns: All this taper in the tail makes this board ride different than most common tapered directional boards. It feels super light in the tail but still has that stable hybrid camber feel as long as you put more weight on the front foot. The Gentemstick Chaser HP is very good when it comes to skidding a turn and it is a pretty forgiving overall ride.

Edge Hold: Pretty good edge hold but it feels like most of the grip comes off the front foot.

Turn Initiation:  Very quick edge to edge for a board this wide in the waist and nose. You can really whip this around quickly and it will get there when you need it to.

Turning Experience/Carving: The Gentemstick Chaser HP is a counterintuitive carver. You would think you need lot’s of weight on the back foot but it actually likes a lot of weight on the front foot like you are bottom turning on a wave and need to beat a little section to get into the pocket. If you like the idea of that kind of turn on a snowboard then you will like the Gentemstick Chaser HP. It just needs you to set up your rear stance angles pretty positive to make it turn correctly.

Powder:  There is so much directional float going on with the Gentemstick Chaser HP and it rides almost like a dedicated powder board. The tail really sinks into the snow and the nose really stays up. When set all the way back you can get a difference between nose and tail of 12 inches and a setback from center of the board of 6 which is really far back so this is all about easy directional float.

Speed: The Gentemstick Chaser HP is not a bomber. It’s light and poppy flex doesn’t help it dampen up the ride but you don’t get this board to bomb. You get it to make stylistic turns on groomers and ride powder.

Uneven Terrain: You can turn pretty quick through bumps but like all these Alternative Gentemstick boards they just don’t power over bumps or messy tracked up snow well.

All in all, the Gentemstick Chaser HP is a very unique special ride. It’s the kind of ride that needs the rider to do what it wants and if you do it’s a pretty fun time.

A comparison between the Gentemstick Chaser 2019, Jones Mind Expander, Yes Optmistic 2019, Rossignol Sashimi and Rome Powder Division 153MT

Gentemstick Chaser HP Past Reviews

The Gentemstick Chaser HP, like the Hornet, is a very tapered directional pretty light really poppy unique ride that isn’t for everyone.  However, if you match up with the riding style this board prefers it might be the kind of board you want to bring home to meet mom.  For me, the style of rider this board prefers doesn’t match my style when it comes to riding groomers so it took some time and effort for me to start learning how to adapt to this board. After some time I began to start understanding the front foot heavy articulate type of ride but I still have a long way to go to understand how to really rail this when turning.  It seems like it prefers those that want to slow down to make the most out of every turn.  I can see why some of my friends like boards like this and spend lots of time integrating their style to this type of board.  However, In powder, the Chaser HP had a minimal learning curve and floated like a champ.
