How The Burton 3D Deep Daze Review Happened:

Borrowed this for an extended demo and sent it back. 1 day demo. A few laps at a demo. Liked it so much, asked to keep it (only do this with favorites).  Liked it so much we bought it.  Precious Good Ride dollars were spent to buy this and review it.

Days: 4 Days
Conditions: Pretty great PNW pow, good but not great pow and thicker pow with freezing fog starting to make an ice layer on top. I did a lot of early morning slackountry runs with Drift Boards & Union Rovers

How It Was Tested

Many of the days I rode this I also took out other powder boards like the Arbor Satori (super different) and Capita Powder Racers which was a much better board to test against. This helped me understand how it floats against boards I’m more familiar with.

Approximate Weight

The Burton 3D Deep Daze felt just right for my weight and boot size. I would be curious to see how a 164 would ride if they made one as I like Pure Pow boards like this to be super big and floaty.

(We don’t put in the exact weight because with wood cores there is no consistency in a boards weight)

Sizing

The Burton 3D Deep Daze felt really good in a 159 for my specs listed above. I wouldn’t want to size down. The waist and nose seem a bit wide but there is 20mm of taper so the tail is pretty narrow making it fine for a dude with size 9’s and 185lbs.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for the Burton 3D Deep Daze boards. You can of course go bigger or smaller depending on your riding style and boot’s footprint, but these work best for not turning the board slower than it should be and not having the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag.
149: 7.5-8.5
154: 8.5-9.5
159: 9-10

For weight I would stay close to the Burton’s recommended weight ranges. If it comes down to boot size or weight, I would make sure it fits your boot first and then your weight a close second. It’s ok to go a little over on the weight recommendation if you have to get a better fit for your boot size.

Shape/Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

The Burton 3D Deep Daze is pretty tapered and directional but like most tapered Burton boards they don’t feel as tapered as you would think. Also this didn’t feel as set back on board as it its.

The Burton 3D Deep Daze has a flat to rocker profile that is pretty much the same as the Burton 3D fish which I absolutely love. The 3D Fish is so forgiving and so floaty but the channels in the 3D Deep Daze take some of that easy forgiving feel in thicker pow. It’s still pretty easy to skid a turn but sometimes the channels in the front and especially the rear can make riding in thicker pow feel more locked in. As a result it’s harder to skid a turn.

Flex Personality

There is a very middle ground flex happening here but with the rocker well before the nose/tail it butters really easy.

There is decent pop too.

Uneven Terrain

I didn’t ride a lot of uneven snow and was lucky enough to get good pow but the

Edge Hold

Competent enough for a pow board. Not ideal if you see a hundred meters’ of steep icy shit before the pow but good enough for most.

Speed/Base Glide

The base glide of the Burton 3D Daily Driver is pretty decent. I’ve felt faster for sure but when well waxed with good Burton wax like I did there was above average glide. For example the Capita Powder Racers had a little easier glide on same day same run tests.

Turning Experience/Carving

Not really a carver or a board you want to ride on groomers much. It’s nothing terrible and very doable but it’s a massively far cry from directional camber boards in Burton’s line.

Powder

The float in pow is exceptional and pretty much effortless. No rear leg burn at all. The one thing is in thicker powder the 5 channels on the tail grab a lot and sometimes make the board lock into the direction you are going and fit you a little on the turn. Being a surfer all my life, its like having too much fin on a quad thruster in the ocean. When you go to turn it just doesn’t let you as easy as you would like. Or maybe even getting weird and putting in 5 fins since it has 5 channels in the back. Since this is surf inspired I’d like to see 3 or 2 Channels in the tail to emulate a Thruster, 2+1 or Twin in the tail and maybe have none in the nose. Or maybe even a Quad. However, those that like this more locked in feel or mainly ride blower pow might like having channels that emulate 5 powder fins in the snow.

With a 21.75″ stance width you can get -5″ back from center of board. That is a hell of a lot of set back. Then add in 20mm of taper and you can see why the directional float is so effortless. I also love that when set all the way back the stance width is only 21.75″ vs. 23″ on the Burton 3D Fish.

Conclusion

So I really thought this was going to be my board and it would unseat the Burton 3D Fish as a favorite but I couldn’t vibe with the channels. If you like the idea of having fins in the back of your snowboard these channels kind of give you that feel. I personally feel like the 3D fish would be a better call for most but some might really like this unique
