Positives

  • Lateral Flex Almost Feels Like Non-Step On
  • Very Adjustable
  • Fast In and Out
  • Very Soft For Park Riders

Negatives

  • Super Expensive
  • Ankle Harness Not Very Supportive
  • Plastic Around Step On Causes Pain
  • High Tech But Not Durable
  • Limited Response Even For Step On

Summary

The Burton Waverange X Pro has many faults like not being that reliable, super soft/not very responsive and can cause pain in the Achilles heel. However it does have a normal lateral flex like a non-Step On boot and a super soft flex for those that want a more skate like feel in the park or a more natural feel for easier turning snowsurf boards.

Davey borrowed the Burton Waverange X Pro for an extended demo and sent it back. I bought the size 9 to test it and then sold it for a huge loss when I was done.

Fit

Davey and I had opposite takes on the fit. My fit felt good but a little long vs. most Burton boots. It also felt wider than most Step On boots I tried. Davey felt his 12’s were narrow and not the right length for 12’s vs. his 12 Burton Ion’s and he wanted to size up to a 12.5 or 13.

One thing to note is my boot was a production model and Davey’s was a demo model so it might be that my fit could be closer to what you feel in all sizes but hard to say.

Adjustability/Heel Hold

There are 3 BOA’s adjusting 3 different areas. 1 for the foot area, one for the blue rubber ankle support to replace the outside ankle strap like you see on the Photon and Ion Step On and 1 for the upper area. It’s great to have all this adjustability but the Blue Rubber Ankle support isn’t that supportive and causes an awkard pressure point. I wish this was on the outside attached to the tongue instead of inside next to the liner.

Inner Platic / Rubber Adjuster

Repair can be an issue if the BOA breaks because the bottom area is covered up.

Flex/ Flex Retention/Construction/Response

Burton Waverange X Pro Step On Boot - Turning
Burton Waverange X Pro Step On Boot – Turning

This is a very soft flex and the Burton Waverange X Pro is one of the softest flexing boots I have ever tried. Even with the soft rubber like blue ankle support attached to one of the BOA’s it’s super soft. There is very little response and if it didn’t have the added response from the step on system it would have almost no response. I didn’t like how easy the front part of the boot folded over and pressed my heel into the hard plastic that holds the step on attachment and it felt like it was tearing off all the skin on my Achilles heel on a harder toe side turn. Even with the easy lateral flex which I’ve been wanting from Step On since it came out I can’t get past the lack of response and heel pan. I couldn’t wait to stop testing these.

The construction seems high tech but doesn’t seem to be built to hold up long term and the way it doesn’t rebound after a flex concerns me.

Shock Absorption

I was surprised at how minimal the shock absorption was. It looked like there was more so it’s best for those that like more board feel underfoot. It’s a massive step down from most other Burton boots.

Heel Hold

There is decent heel hold and if there isn’t you can always get the Burton J-Bars separately to tighten it up. You can cut/sand them down too if they make it too tight.

On & Off

The Burton Waverange X Pro is pretty fast off and decent on but it takes longer than many BOA’s to get it on because of the 3 BOA’s. Overall, it’s pretty convenient and easy.

Traction

Traction
Traction

The Vibram sole (even in the white areas) is excellent when it comes to traction and I always felt sure footed walking.

Reduced Footprint

The Burton Waverange X Pro seemed to have the same 29.6cm footprint that most Burton boots have in size 9. However, the ultra thick heel loop/high back that receives the male connector can cause heel drag for harder carvers but these boots aren’t really made for that. They are mainly made for park. So if you want these for a soft easy turning snowsurf board they might boot out on the heel side.

Conclusion

So the Burton Waverange X Pro is for sure not my type of boot but I was hoping I would appreciate it more than I did. The heel pain was unbearable on toe side turns and it was just too soft/unresponsive. Even for a freestyle oriented Step On boot.
