Positives

  • Great In Uneven Snow For a Directional Twin
  • Very Damp and Stiff
  • Good Pop Going Faster / Bigger
  • Fast Base
  • Excellent Construction
  • Very Competent Grip
  • Super Fun To Turn On Groomers

Negatives

  • Very Damp And Stiff
  • Not Set Back As Many All Mtn Boards

Summary

The Weston Range is not as good as some of its peers when it comes to having good setback float in powder, but it outshines most of them when it comes to making higher speed turns on groomers or getting big air. Even though neither of those things are appealing to me, I still really like the Weston Range and thought it was a very recommendable board.

How it Fits Me

As far as sizing goes, this 158 felt pretty good for my specs. My size 9 boots might be a touch small, but it’s very manageable, and this fit my weight really well. If I were to buy one of these, I’d go with the 158.

Sizing

Weston Range 158 Sizing
Weston Range 158 Sizing

Sizing is very subjective and personal. Never assume your way is the right way, and there is no right answer. Just make sure it’s not too wide to turn, or too narrow to boot out.

Here is the best way to figure out what board will work for you. I rarely use “all caps to emphasize something, but this is really important. NEVER TRUST ANYONE who doesn’t ask or reference boot size, weight, and height.

Boots

You should always start with your boot size first. If your boot is too wide, you can’t turn it; if it’s too narrow, you get the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag. This is the most important part of sizing a board, which is why so many snowboards come in various widths, such as Narrow, Normal, Mid-Wide, Wide, and Ultra-Wide.

Weston includes a max boot size, which is good. It’s a little big, but you can actually follow it, unlike other brands.  Here is more or less the sweet spot to turn the Weston Dream Machine easily without booting out. You can go wider if you carve really hard.

155: 8.5-9.5
158: 9-10
158w: 11-12
161w: 11.5-12.5
163w:12-13

Weight

Your weight determines how the board will flex underfoot. Give you more or less pop, speed, etc. Weston is ultra-conservative with their recommended weight range, and these boards could easily handle a 20-lb heavier rider.

Height

Next, check the length in relation to what you want from this board. The length of the board determines the swing weight/control or longer effective edge, depending on what you want from a board.

Stance Width

Also, check your Stance width against their reference stance to see how well it will work for you on the reference, and to set it all the way back. The Setback on board doesn’t match the 21.5″ reference stance, so you have to go wider at 22.5″ to set it all the way back.

Boots and Bindings Response

Next, factor in your boot and binding’s responsiveness to determine how well you will be able to turn/control a board. The Range likes a medium-fast boot/binding combo when it comes to response.

Personal Preference

Lastly, you need to factor in how you like to ride. Some prefer control, so matching the boot size first for easiest turn initiation is the priority, with weight second. Others prefer dampness over control, want to charge, and like to size up in width and length. Others like to ride wider boards with very responsive boots/bindings to carve harder.

Construction / Durability

Weston makes incredibly well-built/durable boards, and the Range is no exception

Shape

Weston Range 2025 Shape
Weston Range 2025 Shape

So let’s talk shape. This is directional, but it feels very good between the feet. You can see the nose is a little longer than the tail, but you don’t really feel that on snow.

Camber/On Snow Feel

Weston Range 2025 Camber
Weston Range 2025 Camber

When it comes to the camber profile, there’s a decent amount of camber between the feet, going well past the bindings and then transitioning up into a mellow early rise. This feels very stable, one-footing, flat-basing, and going straight. It has that camber feel without all that catch of camber, thanks to the early rise.

Looking at this flex, you would think an intermediate could easily handle this. I would say keep it to strong intermediates just because this has a pretty aggressive flex, and it’s harder to skid a turn than you would think. It is a lot more forgiving than a full camber ride in this shape and flex, though.

Edge Hold

Weston Range 2025 Edge Hold
Weston Range 2025 Edge Hold

When it comes to edge hold, there’s a nice disruption in the sidecut, and on a hard snow day, I could really feel this edge hold. Other boards I tested the same day that didn’t have a disruption in the sidecut were not holding nearly as well.

Flex Personality

Weston Range 2025 Flex
Weston Range 2025 Flex

So let’s talk about the flex of the Weston Range 158. You can see it’s a very stiff flex for a directional twin-ish kind of ride. There’s very little give, but it’s got lots of pop despite being a little on the damp side. Most of the give is at the end of the tail, not where it rockers up. The same goes for the nose. There’s a little more give, but not much, and it’s absolutely stiff between the feet.

Weston Range 2025 Ollies
Weston Range 2025 Ollies

This is challenging to butter. It has good pop and takes a little work, but it definitely rewards you. This is the shape of an all-mountain board with a freeride flex to it. It’s stiffer than almost any other all-mountain board I’ve tried recently.

Uneven Snow

When it comes to uneven snow, this can handle hard, micro-bumpy, uneven snow and power through soft uneven snow like a champ. This is a great all-conditions, all-day ride. It’s stiffer and damper than most all-mountain boards I try. It even felt a touch stiffer and damper than my Korua Otto.

Speed

This damp personality that’s so good in uneven snow also translates into pointing it. I could go really fast with this board. While it’s not a full-on straight-liner, I felt way more comfortable than I should have, pointing it on an all-mountain board. It had that freeride pointing feel to it, and the sidecut was very friendly for going straight.

Base Glide

Weston Range 2025 Base Glide
Weston Range 2025 Base Glide

The base glide is very good, even right out of the wrapper. Brand new, without a wax, you could tell this just had easy glide. If you take care of this base and wax it really well, as I have with other Weston boards, it just has really top-tier glide. Maybe not the fastest of the fast, but definitely up there, say in that 90th percentile.

Turning/Carving

Weston Range 2025 Turning
Weston Range 2025 Turning

When it comes to turning, I felt like this initiated a turn kind of medium-ish. It’s not the fastest, but it was comfortable. If you want a board that’s really comfortable and competent at doing quick turns in tight situations like trees or through bumps, there are better boards.

Once I got it on edge, I was impressed at how balanced the turning radius is for being so straight-line friendly. It really did good down-the-line carves, but when I wanted to lay it over and carve across the groomer, this handled it really well. I thought there was more spring out of the turn than expected for what seems like such a mellow camber profile, especially when you started to pick up speed.

The more speed with this, the more this came alive. That’s within reason. This isn’t a full-on, super stiff, hard-charging directional freeride board, but it’s in the upper tier for all-mountain boards for sure. If you like high-speed, powerful carves with good grip, this is a great choice.

What I loved about this board, and a lot of boards like it, is I could weight my turns any way I wanted. I could drive hard off the front foot and thoroughly enjoy doing that. I could center-weight these turns and back-foot-weight these turns, and it never felt washy or weird any way I did that.

Powder

Weston Range 2025 Pow
Weston Range 2025 Pow

When it comes to powder, I felt this wasn’t quite there in comparison to some of my favorite all-mountain boards. I think this would be one area where I wouldn’t mind seeing this board improve. I think a little bit more setback on the board for people like me who see a lot of low-angle powder would really help this.

If you ride a lot of steeper terrain, you’re going to be just fine. If you take it from reference and set it all the way back with full-size discs at a 22.25-inch stance width, you can get two inches back from the center of the board. That’s decent for most all-mountain boards these days. A few years back, when there were fewer directional boards, that would be pretty good, but this is just a little better than a twin.

I felt like this just didn’t quite have the float of some competitors. When I took it out with my Korua Otto, Yes Standard UnInc, or even the United Shapes Horizon, those all outshined this board. But as I said before, it will be very competent in steep terrain, and this base has great glide and a nice tune for powder riding.

Switch/Park

Weston Range 2025 Switch
Weston Range 2025 Switch

When it comes to riding switch, I really enjoyed how this went both directions. It didn’t feel perfect like an asymmetrical or perfectly true twin, but it’s very competent for a somewhat directional board like this.

This would be great for launching off big kickers, way bigger than I’m going to hit. But even on small micro jumps around the mountain, it was still comfortable and competent. It didn’t feel like it was complaining that the rider on it wasn’t that good.

This has a good grip for the pipe. I’d like something a little more turny, but a lot of people will appreciate this in the pipe. Not really for jibs.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I think this Weston Range was really fun. If this had a little easier directional float for those super deep days or low-angle powder days, this would be exceptional.

But as it stands right now, it is a great aggressive mountain freestyle to all-mountain ride for those who ride switch a good bit, want to carve hard at high speeds, and want to launch off some big things. This is a great ride. It’s also very damp in all conditions with great edge hold, so this will be on my recommendation list for sure.
