Spark R and D Womens Surge 2021 Review by The Good Ride

The Womens Surge Bindings from Spark offer a stiff and responsive ride so you can charge backcountry lines with confidence and power. The Spark Bindings simplify the hiking process. And allow for quick and simple removal and attachment between ski and ride modes.

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  No one is perfect and we do make money from the “Where To Buy” links below, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average rider’s perspective.

How This Review Happened: We spent our precious Good Ride dollars to demo these.

Days: 2

Size: M/L

Riders: Steph

Boots:  Vans Ferra Pro

Board: Stone Topo Splitboard

Set Up: 20.5” Centered 15 front -12 back

Canting: The review states that there is no canting on the bindings, but you can purchase canted pucks from Spark if you want canting.

These Surge Bindings are responsive, and stiff. They would be good for those hard charging backcountry ladies out there. The heel cup and high back are adjustable. And you get a good range of adjustability on the straps as well.

Spark did a great job at simplifying the attachment and removal process of these bindings. There are no loose parts to lose in the snow. You can easily flip up the locking toe ramp with numb cold fingers. And they fit easily in their locking positions in both split mode and ride mode.

Shock Absorption: The flat metal footbed isn’t the most shock absorbing or comfortable. I was riding them with my Vans Ferra Pro boots that have a fairly playable sole. Maybe with a stiffer boot sole, these bindings will feel more shock absorbing and comfortable.

Straps: I loved how the ankle strap fit perfectly to my boot. The ankle straps are asymmetrical and give a nice response. The toe straps are designed to fit over the toe box of the boot, as well as over the top.

Ratchets: These bindings come with Burton ratchets that adjust smoothly and quickly.

Highback: The Surge highback has a stiff flex, is very responsive, but is pretty comfortable at the same time. It comes with tool free forward lean, and locked into place when flipped up against the heel cup.

The Womens Surge Bindings come with the T1 System. They easily slide into the brackets on the splitboard for touring mode. They lock down with a locking toe ramp. And slide onto the pucks for ride mode. The system is simple and easy.

There is also an integrated “whammy bar” for heel lift when hiking. It easily flips down out of the base of the bindings and onto the heel rest.

Overall: The Spark Womens Surge Bindings are a very lightweight, no nonsense splitboard binding. These bindings are simple and easy to use. They give a great amount of support and response. They come with everything you might need for a backcountry tour and nothing you don’t to save weight.
