Summary
The Burton Alekesam is a uni-sex family tree board that comes in some female-friendly sizing (136,140,144,148 & 152cm) There are a lot of sizes for this board so sizing is important. The Alekesam is a tapered directional board with Burton's directional camber profile. It's soft and playful. It shines in fresh snow and starts to show its weaknesses when riding in uneven terrain. An Un-Paid, Un-Biased Breakdown Of How The Burton Women's Alekesam Rides Review by The Good Ride
The Written Review of the Burton Women’s Alekesam and Who It’s For

How The Burton Women’s Alekesam Was Tested:

I borrowed the Burton Women’s Alekesam for an extended demo and sent it back.

Approximate Weight
(We don’t put in the exact weight because, with wood cores, there is no consistency in a board’s weight)
Sizing

Sizing is all about balancing what fits your boot size and your weight for how you like to ride. If your boot is too wide, you can’t turn it; if it’s too narrow, you get the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag. Your weight is a close second to boot size because it determines how the board will feel under your foot.Height comes in a distant 3rd. Some prefer control, so matching the boot size is the priority. Others prefer dampness over control and like to size up.
Here are some idealUS boot sizes for these boards.
136 (243ww)-W’s 7.5
140 (244ww)-W’s 8
144 (246ww)-W’s 8.5
148 (248ww)-W’s 8.5
152 (252ww)-W’s 9
52W (260ww)-W’s 9.5
156 (256ww)-W’s 9.5
56W (264ww)-W’s 10
160 (261ww)-W’s 9.5
I would stay close to the brand’s recommended weight ranges for weight. If it comes down to boot size or weight, I would ensure it fits your boot first and then your weight a close second.
Shape

The Alekesam is a unisex Family Tree board featuring a freeride directional shape with 15mm of taper. It features a significant setback stance with a longer nose and a shorter narrower tail.
Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

The Burton directional camber profile is common along their line. It is characterized by a directional camber under the inserts, a short tail with a slight early rise, and a long reverse camber nose. Since the camber profile is so common, the on-snow feel is determined more by the flex profile, stance location, and taper. Those specific characteristics give this board a surfy-on-snow feel. This board is intended for intermediate to advanced riders who can make quick adjustments and are comfortable with camber boards.
Edge Hold

At moderate to slower speeds the edge held well through a variety of turning radius. Once the Burton women’s Alekesam is taken to higher speeds or steeper pitches the tail tends to wash. Adjusting my weight backward during the exit of the turn helped, however, I think the size played a part. Ideally, I would ride a 149 or bigger and the added length could potentially increase the edge hold.
Flex Personality

Burton ranks this board as a medium to aggressive flex profile. On snow, it feels more like a soft to medium flex. The camber profile gives it a bit more structure however I would classify the board as playful and buttery instead of aggressive.
Uneven Snow

This board was challenging on uneven snow. Its longer nose, short tail and playful flex profile make it ideal on smooth surfaces. Once the snow gets tracked or shifts from soft to hard pack it can get bucky. I could feel every bump and every dip.
Speed

This board does not shine in straight-line runs. Its significant side-cut and flex profile lends itself to turning and not stability at speeds.
Base Glide

I appreciate a company that prioritizes its environmental impact. Burton has made significant steps in using eco-friendly materials. Their sintered WFO base is an example of that effort. With that said, the Burton women’s Alekesam base performs better with frequent weather-specific waxing. If you would like a better experience, wax the board before taking it on snow.
Turning Experience/Carving

As is, with any unisex board, you need to be aware of how your boot will fit on the board. I rode a 144 that has a waist width of 246mm. The ideal shoe size for that waist width is a W’s 8. At a size W’s 7.5 boot, this board felt quick underfoot. If your boot size is smaller, the width may feel too wide and make the board feel sluggish during turns. At the appropriate width, the board was quick edge to edge and was capable of a variety of turning radiuses. The board shines when slashing and with rear-weighted turning. The carving was best at moderate speeds and on lower-angle pitches. The edge hold is challenged by high forced turns. The camber profile does make this board feel catchy with skid turns and loading and unloading lifts. *Note: Ideally, I would prefer to ride a larger board than a 144. If I rode a 152, the board would likely feel wide. If you are looking for a playful board, size down.
Powder

At 2.175 inches back from center with a 20.75 stance width, the Burton Women’s Alekesam has a significant directional setback. What this means is when your bindings are set as far backward as the channel system allows, the board will have over 2 inches of extra surface area in the nose. Combine this with 15mm of taper, and you have a board that will sink in the tail and float in the nose; the perfect combination for easy powder riding. It will perform better in light snow conditions and on untracked snow. Once the snow sets up or gets tracked out the board may feel slippery and harder to control.

Switch/Jumps/Pipe/Jibs

Directional boards is not ideal for switch or park riding, However, this board is a great board for flat surface buttering and natural features that require a little pop.
Final Thoughts
The Burton women’s Alekesam is a step in the right direction towards true unisex boards, but, as is with any new developments, there will be growing pains. Figuring out board sizing as it compares to your shoe size will have an impact on how this board performs. Sizing down the board to accommodate a smaller foot size will give this board a playful and buttery-on-snow feel. You will be able to do quick turns, slashes, and low-angle carves. Someone looking for more stability at speed, strong edge hold during power turns, or prefer to ride more forward on their board should consider a directional board with less taper and a shorter nose.
