Positives

  • Amazing Float
  • Turning Experience
  • Camber Between Feet Helps The Uphill

Negatives

  • Wider Than Most Skin Tracks
  • Requires Special Wide Crampons

Summary

The Jones Storm Chaser Split is an absolute blast. It’s just fun. It’s a great time. Probably not my choice for a pure mountaineering mission. Probably not my choice as your only splitboard. Some people say it's too wide. It's not just the width—it’s the combo of width, flex, and crampon compatibility.

Approximate Weight

The Bataleon Cameleon felt pretty normal weight-wise for this width and length. (We don’t put in the exact weight because with wood cores, there is no consistency in a board’s weight)

Sizing

Jones Storm Chaser Split - Sizing
Jones Storm Chaser Split – Sizing

The Jones Storm Chaser Split, the 152, is my size. I’m about 5’7″, 165 pounds plus a pack. And the size was absolutely spot on. No issues there at all. The board felt very well controlled. It did not override me.

Shape

The Jones Storm Chaser Split is a tapered directional swallow tail that comes pretty wide.

Boots & Bindings

I rode this exclusively with my Nitro Vertical bindings and my K2 Ender boots.

Flex Profile

Jones Storm Chaser Split - Flex
Jones Storm Chaser Split – Flex

Go from the center of the board—you’ll notice a nice, smooth, even flex. Now, being soft, the big spoon nose will chatter a lot at speed. Conversely, the tail is pretty darn stiff and pretty firm. You can definitely power through some chopped-up snow with this board. Between the feet—again—pretty medium-ish to medium-soft. The key thing: all that chatter up on the nose, if it’s on edge, won’t translate up to instability through the feet.

Hardware

Jones Storm Chaser Split - Clips
Jones Storm Chaser Split – Clips

What you’ve got is really nice Karakoram hardware up front and back on the tail. One of the things you’ll notice is we’ve got a nice clip up on the nose. We don’t have one back on the tail, but I’ve not noticed any issues with this thing vibrating or getting unstable when riding. These Karakoram clips definitely do a really nice job at holding this board together, whether you’re carving mellow runs through trees or really making it charge through some big bowls.

Uphill Performance

Jones Storm Chaser Split – Uphill

What goes downhill must then go back up. We do have some camber—a setback camber—on this board. But remember: it’s a soft flex. You’re not going to get a big pop and glide out of every single kick turn. It’s a little more of a stomp-and-hope than a kick-and-glide.

Climbing Considerations

  1. Width: This board is wide. Side-hilling is not the best. That’s the single biggest weakness I found. When you’re side-hilling, it’s hard to get your weight way over the edges to get good purchase. So it’s going to be a little more drifty on side hills. Choose your skin track angle wisely, and definitely carry some extra food for your skier friends to set a better track.
  2. Crampon Fit: You’re going to have to go wide. I have standard Spark crampons and they did not fit over this board. So you’ll need wide ones. They sell them, of course, but if this is your second splitboard, you’ll probably need a separate set of crampons if you’re taking this into steep or icy terrain.

Disrupted Sidecut

The mellow, disrupted sidecut—can’t say enough how much difference this makes on the uphills. It gives you a little traction. More importantly, when the board comes back together, it locks so sweet and so smooth. This disrupted sidecut makes these splits ride as close to a solid as you’re ever going to find.

On Snow Feel

Jones Storm Chaser Split- On Snow Feel

This board is a lot more than it looks like. You look at it and think it’s going to be just a soft snow, powder day-only board. Well, there’s some truth to that—and some negatives as well. This board has a very long effective edge for being a 152. So you’ve got lots of purchase.

While this nose is soft, get this thing on edge and it holds like a train track. It’s shocking how well this board holds an edge. In fact, out of all the boards I tried this year at ludicrous speed, I felt the most stable on this board in good conditions.

Uneven Snow

Jones Storm Chaser Split – Uneven Snow

Why “good conditions”? Because if things get icy, chunky, or a little rainy—like we often have in the Northwest—the soft flex and camber profile (setback camber) will chatter. It can buck you a bit. So be careful. This is not my mountaineering board. Not the one for unknown conditions. But if I know I’m getting great corn or powder? Why wouldn’t you pick this?

Turning Experience

Jones Storm Chaser Split - Turning Experience
Jones Storm Chaser Split – Turning Experience

This is the fun guy in the room. Let’s talk tight tree performance. I’m a big fan of obnoxiously, stupidly tight trees. I also demoed the Jones Hovercraft last season. It floats great. It’s fast. It loves high speed. But that board—I felt like I was waiting for it to actually go edge to edge.

This board? Waist width around 27.5—way faster. The reason? It’s so flexy. It twists. You can get your weight from nose over to tail and almost pivot the thing off the tail. Even though it’s wide, it will go edge to edge much faster than you’d expect for a 27-wide board.

Base Glide

Jones Storm Chaser Splitboard – Base

This is Jones’ 8000 series base. Looks really pretty. I’m personally a big fan of just simple black bases. No complaints. This isn’t the Jones Premium 9000 base, but you’re not going to be sweating the details. You’ll have no problem making long runouts after a big bowl and keeping up with your skier friends. No worries there.

Final Thoughts

For a secondary fun toy, it doesn’t get much better than this. Get one, go out, put a smile on your face, and have a blast, folks.
