Positives

  • Near Excellent Grip
  • Make turning & Switch Better
  • Stable mellow C3 Profile (for full camber)

Negatives

  • Poor Float In pow
  • Not As Poppy as Some C3 Boards
  • Extra Magnetraction In Heel Grabs more in softer snow

Summary

The Gnu RC C3 is a great mtn freestyle twin for those who ride centered, perfectly duck and don’t want a shorter/wider shape. For 2024, the RC C3 added little plates over each foot to mix things up a bit, and it's not changing in 2025.

A Detailed Breakdown Of How The Gnu RC C3 Rides And Who It Is For Review by The Good Ride

Gnu RC C3 Written Review

Gnu RC C3 Mountain Freestyle Review - The Good Ride

How It Was Tested

I got to ride the Gnu RC C3 at the demos, but I did spend a good amount of time on the previous model, which was only missing the asym riser plates.

Approximate Weight

The Gnu RC C3 feels pretty normal. (We don’t put in the exact weight because, with wood cores, there is no consistency in a board’s weight)

Sizing

Sizing and Width Over the Gnu RC C3 Inserts

This 157.5 Sizing is all about balancing what fits your boot size and your weight for how you like to ride. If your boot is too wide, you can’t turn it; if it’s too narrow, you get the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag. Your weight is a close second to boot size because it determines how the board will feel under your foot.  Height comes in a distant 3rd. Some prefer control, so matching the boot size is the priority. Others prefer dampness over control and like to size up.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for these boards.
154.5: 8-9
157.5: 8.5-9.5
159.5: 9-10
158w: 11-12
159w: 11-12

Gnu is pretty liberal in terms of recommended weight, and I agree with their recommendations. They are open to all different types of sizing preferences.

Shape

The Gnu RC C3 has a centered stance, asym twin shape with asym magnetraction. It’s about as asymmetrical as it gets and more true than a true twin.

Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

RC C3 Camber profile

Like the TRS, the Gnu RC C3 has a mellow but full C3 camber from tip to tail. There is little to no early rise before the tip/tail. You have a passive bend in the middle, but it doesn’t touch the snow, so consider this mellow, full camber. It’s more forgiving than traditional camber, but only by a little. If you are a beginner, intermediate, or just like a more forgiving/chill ride, go with the C2. Or if you are a harder-charging intermediate and up, go C3, as it does have some consequences.

Flex Personality

There is a pretty medium mountain-friendly flex with the Gnu RC C3. It butters pretty well and pops well for having such a mellow camber. However, coming off boards like the Gnu Antigravity and Dynamo (much more directional rides, though) with a higher C3 camber profile, you definitely feel the reduction in pop. In comparison to really camber-rich boards like the Nidecker Gamma and Gamma APX, they pop way more, but the spoon nose is much harder to butter with.

Uneven Snow

The Gnu RC C3 has a pretty good all-day ride, and it won’t shit the bed on you when the snow gets uneven.

Edge Hold

RC C3 Asymmetrical Magnetraction

The Asymmetrical Magnetraction is very unique and in firm to hard snow it feels really great. On the older model I felt it grab a little more on the heel side in softer snow which isn’t a great feel. It is something you can get used to pretty easy though.

Speed

I liked the TRS a little better for going fast but the Gnu RC C3 has pretty comfortable mountain speed for sure.

Base Glide

The base glide isn’t that great. It doesn’t have super-low lows, but the highs never get that high.

Turning Experience/Carving

Very quick edge-to-edge, and when you get the Gnu RC C3’s edge committed, it has a pretty balanced turning experience. Coming out of a harder carve isn’t amazing, but it’s pretty fun, especially if you want to carve in harder snow.

Powder

No thanks. I’ve ridden enough camber twins to know this isn’t what I want in pow. My 2000s full-camber twin cartwheeling days are over.

Switch/Freestyle/Park

This is truly special riding switch like all Asym boards if you set them up centered and perfectly duck. Super fun in pipe like the TRS. Jumps are great too. It tracks well into jumps for being a little on the turny side. Jibs are doable for sure but there are better boards out there for that.

Final Thoughts

So I really liked this Asym Twin, but there are a lot of great asym twins out there. Excellent shorter/wider rides like the YES Greats and Ride Twin PIg and more poppy rides like the Nidecker Gamma’s, but this has its own stand-out qualities as well. Many people, especially those who see a lot of hard snow and want a more traditional width/length ride will like this.

Gnu RC C3 Past Reviews

2021-2023 Review

The Gnu RC C3 is a mellow, almost full-camber take on the C2 Riders Choice. It isn’t super poppy for C3, but it’s less catchy and still easy to butter.

Rossignol Jibsaw, Yes Jackpot, Never Summer Protoslinger, Ride TwinPig, Signal Park.

Set-Up:  21.5” Wide 15 front -15 back.Centered.

Approximate Weight

Feels pretty normal. Not heavy, not light. Just normal.

(I don’t put in the exact weight because, with wood cores, there is no consistency in a board’s weight)

Sizing

The 157.5 Felt pretty good for my specs listed above. I wouldn’t want to size down and definitely wouldn’t want to size up.

Here are some ideal US boot sizes for these boards. You can, of course, go bigger or smaller, but these work best for not turning the board slower than it should be and not having the dreaded Toe & Heel Drag.

The 154.5: 8-9 US boots
157.5: 9-10 US boots.
158w: 11-12
162w: 11-12

Camber/On Snow Feel/Ability Level

Gnu RC C3 Camber

The Gnu RC C3 has a semi-catchy feel, which isn’t bad for the tip/tail touching the snow. The really mellow camber height and the passive bend in the middle make it feel less like a full-on camber than many other C3 boards out there. However, it still isn’t forgiving because the tip/tail still catches pretty easily if you get too off your game.

Flex/Pop/Buttering

With this camber feel, we thought the Gnu RC C3 would be more challenging for Butter. It wasn’t. The medium flex between the feet transitioning to a medium/soft flex in the tip/tail makes it pretty easy to camber. The pop was easy to access, and we had a good time generating our own little bit of air.

Speed

One thing we didn’t talk about in the video review was how the Gnu RC C3 could point it. It is very competitive when you pick up speed. The camber gives it a level of dampness above the regular Riders Choice. It’s not bomber, but it is fine on a straight-line or two.

Uneven Terrain

With the Gnu RC C3, you can ride all day. You can feel chatter, but if you have decent shock-absorbing boots or bindings, it doesn’t reverberate into your joints.

Edge Hold

Gnu RC C3 Asymmetrical edge hold

In our initial review, we didn’t feel the asym edges. After I rode it in a lot of different conditions

Turn Initiation

Borders on being fast edge to edge and just a shade behind the regular Riders Choice.

Turning Experience/Carving

Carving with the Gnu RC C3 is really good for this medium-ish flex and this mellow but full camber profile. You can feel the camber resist into and then spring out of the turn. There is a pretty balanced turning experience like most Mervin Twins/Asym Twins.

Powder

I didn’t even want to try this in powder. It might be a little better than a full-on camber, but it’s still a centered camber twin. If you can rip a camber twin in pow, you can rip this. That being said, you probably don’t need our reviews either.

Switch

The Asymmetrical twin shape of the Gnu RC C3 is not only good for really symmetrical turning but also makes switch riding easier for people like us. Having the heel and toe side edges match up to your duck stance angle makes it even better than a true twin.

Getting Air/Park

My friends thought it was better for jibbing than expected. When broken in and the flex softens up, the Gnu RC C3 shouldn’t be bad. Still, it is no Space Case. It really shines in the pipe and on jumps. Some riders might prefer a boardless turny with a little more spring for using this as an all-day kicker lapper though. However, it tracks well enough for me into the micro kickers. If you want a technical pipe rider, then the Gnu RC C3 is the call. It drives hard wall to wall and can also turn quickly for an adjustment in the flats so you can hit the wall properly. It’s just not forgiving anywhere in the park, so it’s technical/advanced to expert riders only.

Conclusion

So overall, the Gnu RC C3 was a fun board to ride. For me personally there are other asym twins that tickle my taint a little more but this does a lot of things wright. This is a fun park to mountain freestyle ride for those that see a lot of hard to icy snow.

If this review helped, we’d appreciate if you:
