Patagonia Powder Bowl Insulated Men's Jacket 2013 Review by The Good Ride
The Patagonia Powderbowl Insulated Mens Jacket is a very well built jacket that appeals to skiers and snowboarders. This isn’t a bad snowboard jacket for those that need a lot of waterproofing and doesn’t like to layer as much as you do with a true shell. It’s got a lot more warmth than a shell but a lot less than a puffy.
Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews. No one is perfect and we do make money from the “Where To Buy” links below, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average riders’ perspective.
Size Tried: Large
Weight: 190 lbs,
Upper Body-:44” Chest, Torso Length 23” (collarbone to pant button), Shoulder Width Approx 22”, Arm Length 19.5” (pit to wrist)
Lower Body: 33” Waist, 42” Hips, 30” Inseam, 24.5” Thigh
Turn On’s: Size L Jackets that fit well around my chest, size M pants that fit well around my thighs so I can get in and out of my pockets, open roads, Surfy Powder Turns, Riding with Friends, new gear and especially my super-hot super smart super funny wife.
Turn Off’s: Size L Jackets that don’t fit well around my chest, super tight Size M Pants that I can’t get up over my thighs, traffic and people who can’t park inside the lines.
Fit: Feels like it fits pretty well. It fits good around the shoulders but then expands out a little wider in the middle than many jackets that I have tried.
Comfort: Very comfortable and it feels good with only one layer below.
Construction: Patagonia doesn’t screw around with their construction and it makes for a long lasting jacket. Also, they have a very good warranty that follows the spirit over the letter of the warranties rules. They seem to like their customers.
Hood: Articulating hoods aren’t really my jam but many really like how they fold down out of the way. No matter how I adjust them I always seem to have a little gap at the sides of the jacket that expose a little part of my cheeks right below the goggle.
Insulation/Warmth: Very warm but not like a super puffy jacket. Still, it’s great for those that ride in cold areas that can also get wet.
Waterproofing: Gore-Tex is well Gore-Tex and it’s one of the better choices for waterproofing out there.
Breathability: Gore-Tex really blocks out water but it doesn’t breathe as well as some of its competitors. It seems to be more around the 15-20k range where some competitors like 37.5 and Sympatex are higher. Still, it breathes well enough to regulate some moisture if temps rise.
Overall: All in All the Patagonia Insulated Powderbowl jacket has what most Gore-Tex jackets don’t and that’s a lot of insulation so it makes for a good one jacket solution for those that run cold or ride in cold areas that also get wet. Patagonia also has an impeccable environmental and ethical business track record so if you want some of the greenest gear out there you can make a good argument to the core snowboarder as to why you bought this.
