NOW Pilot 2017 - 2016 Review by The Good Ride

The NOW Pilot Snowboard Binding changed up a bit of the standard NOW construction to address some complaints that many riders (including us) had. Because of that, it’s now a binding that we would like to have in their quiver.

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  No one is perfect and we do make money from the “Where To Buy” links below, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average riders’ perspective.

Good in the right conditions

Height, Weight And Boot Size (for Boards, Boots & Bindings): Ride warpig.

Bought after having a set of button cartels.
Great in powder, surfy flowing turns and carves. Good in the right conditions and ideal snow.
Not great in steep icy poor conditions in the French Alps, the bindings take away the natural ability for the board to flex the way it's meant to torsionally and laterally,
from under your footbeds.
Had to go back to cartels. And pay resort prices.

It is not worth it

First of all, Now has cool design and cool technology and I read tons of reviews before pulling the trigger finally. The box arrived today and it was so exciting to me to receive them especially during this COVID-19 period. I hoped the product would match the facts of my imagination; however and unfortunately "No". The materials they use are fairly cheap to me, in comparison with my other bindings (Burton, Union, Flux, BMBW and Rossignol). Heel straps would not even fit my boots, the ratchets are not smooth and no adjustability at all (hight back rotation, footbed and etc.) If the company is marketing this to compete against Cartel, I think they should really really try harder. I even felt my least valuable Rossignol Cuda bindings out of my collection are better than NOW Pilot (I was thinking to switch them but now Cuda stays). Overall, it is not worth it. I gave 2 star because I do not even want to ride them but maybe they are good for somebody else.

Doesn't do it for me

I really wanted to like this binding and bought the king pin kit so i could move the bindings between boards relatively easily.

The binding performed adequately for powder laps in the back country (i flipped the heel strap as recommended and think this is legit). It will likely stay permanently mounted to a storm chaser or similar for backcountry pow laps.

I found it unsatisfactory for resort freestyle laps on a yes greats and a lib tech trs. The structureless foam base and the lack of adjustability for fit leaves me with unresponsive feel. I ride these back to back with a burton genesis (OG reflex) and there is just no comparison.

Most comfortable binding

I currently have these, Cartels, & Malavitas and they're all outstanding, but the Pilots are the most comfortable making them my favorite. No pinch or tension spots and great response without cranking them down. I had the toe strap slipping down issue that some people have had. Flipping the toe straps cured that with zero issue since. If Now would just embroider the logo on the bottom of the toe strap as well & call them ambidextrious like the ankle strap the toe strap slipping down issue would probably go away. I love being able to fine tune the feel of the binding with stiffer or softer base pads as well. Great product!

Huge shoutout to NOW bindings for these gems. Smooth ride yet stiff enough for whatever you need. Hit the west coast on a pow day at Crystal Kountain and then rode heavy packed and groomed at Snowshoe Mountain. Talked to customer service recently as well and by far the best I’ve ever dealt with. 10/10 BUY THESE.

Now Pilot bindings 15/16 (size medium)

Coming from two sets of Cartels, one without and one with hinge tech. I tried out some NOW Selects but felt a little too locked in laterally and inhibited to move the way I wanted so I decided to give the NOW Pilots a shot. NOW definitely got things right with the Pilot bindings. It has a nice solid response that has a bit of playfulness and still reduces heel lift. Between the foot bed, skate tech and high back that perfectly cradles the boot it is by far the most comfortable and damp bindings I have tried and have eliminated the knee pain I used to have from snowboarding. They are the perfect bindings for ripping through glades, charging hard packed crud and popping off side hits. I found the ratchets easier to use than the Burton’s because of how the ladders feed clearly into the mouth while burton’s have a stupid metal clasp in the way. The ratchets are smooth enough that I don't even think about it and the ankle strap tucks behind the highback so getting in and out is easy. I ended up putting my selects hyperfuse ankle straps on the pilots and it is now my favorite bindings to date. (Looks like 2017’s have done something similar). I ride duck stance -15\15 with hard bushings on the outside and soft bushings on the inside. I found this gives a good immediate response with a smooth finish and allows the ankle to roll in slightly if it needs to giving a canting under stress. I highly recommend the NOW Pilots.
