Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  We do make money from the “Where To Buy” links, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average camper’s perspective.

How This Review Happened:  We were sent this light for an extended demo.

Packability:  If you are comparing the RA Pak light to a headlamp, it isn’t very compact with the battery pack included. The light strip alone is pretty slim and light and easy to store. But the strength of the RA Pak light is equal to up to 5 headlamps. So if you are comparing the RA Pak light to 5 headlamps, then it is compact.

You do have to store the battery pack somewhere when the light is in use. They do offer a few different sizes in these. The battery pack in the video is the middle size. But the battery pack also can be used to charge your phone and other devices. So it is a dual purpose piece of equipment.

Durability: The light strip itself is pretty simplistic in the design, and it is flexible and waterproof. So I feel like it won’t break too easy. The battery pack seems pretty durable too. It seems like it can withstand a few drops here and there without being too worried about damaging it.

Functionality: The Kogalla Single RA Pak light puts off a great amount of light for its size. The light is warm and not to harsh on your eyes, so it doesn’t kill your night vision. There are three settings, low, high, and flashing. It can provide you up to 800 lumens of soft, widespread light for hiking, trail running, or just around camp.

The Battery Pak 2 can last up to 6 days if you are only using the low setting, and up to 6 hrs on high. It takes about 6 hours to fully charge.

The variety of mounting options for the Pak 2 light is great. It comes with a velcro d-ring strip that you can attach to any small strap. It comes with a roll of velcro that you can custom cut to attach the light to whatever you want. And it also comes with a magnetic sheet that allows you to magnetically attach the light to your jacket, clothing, or anything metal.

Overall: The Kogalla RA Single Pak 2 light is a versatile lighting option. It can light a very wide area and can be used for hiking, running, night snowboarding, or anything else you can think of.

Paige’s Perspective

The Kogalla RA is the ultimate adventure light. Headlamps are no comparison to the wide range of light that radiates from the Kogalla RA. Unlike a small headlamp beam bobbing around in the darkness, this light cast a vast expanse of light (approximately
120°) in front of you that does not jostle around as you move. This light is also great for sedentary activities like camp cooking, reading in your tent, or illuminating a boulder for a nighttime session. Whether you are up before the sun or charging late into the night, the Kogalla RA light will illuminate your way.

I tested out the Kogalla RA Single Pack 2. This setup comes with one RA Adventure Light, the BatPak 2 battery, three different attachment systems, and a hard case to protect your gear.

The RA Adventure Light is made up of a long flexible extension cord connected to a strip of 5 LED lights – basically, it is 5 high-end headlamps combined into one power strip. The RA emits 800 lumens of light, casting a wide range of light on the area in front of you.

Personally, I would like to add another RA light strip to my setup for those times that I am on super dark late-night trail adventures, where more light helps keep the hallucinations at bay. One RA works great though. This light allowed me to move quicker in the dark than I was able to with a standard headlamp. I could see obstacles in front of my path more easily and felt more confident with such a wide range of light. The wide range of light that it casts is not disorienting like a small headlamp light can be.

When you are moving around the RA light steam is steady, unlike a headlight beam that moves around way too much and casts disorienting shadows. There are three modes the RA can cycle through – high, low, and flash. Each individual mode can be adjusted allowing you to find the perfect setting to suit your needs. The RA light itself is waterproof and can guide you back to the car if you encounter an unexpected storm. The RA weighs 3.6 ounces – I did not notice it when it was fastened to my hydration pack.

The BatPak 2 is the middle-sized battery pack that Kogalla offers. It is a durable and rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Weighing in at 9.9 ounces, this battery is not quite an ultralight item. However, you can run a single RA on high for 6 hours or on low for 6 days – Not bad for a battery weighing a little more than a half of a pound. You can also cut weight with the BatPak 1 or add weight and security with the BatPak 3. This simple battery has one button that turns the system on with one click, and off with two clicks. I did not have a problem with the battery accidentally getting turned off while in use. With three USB ports and one Micro-USB port, it can also charge other devices like your phone or watch if you’re in a pinch in the backcountry.

The three different attachment systems the RA comes with are the MagBack, D-ring strap, and Velcro roll. The MagBack is a magnetic strip that allows you to easily attach the RA to your clothing or pack. I slipped the MagBack into my water bottle holder on my hydration vest and the RA stayed in place as I ran down a technical trail. The D-ring strap allows you to attach the RA to you with carabiners or my personal favorite, a homemade belt made from paracord. The carabiners did not hold the light as steady as I would have liked while I was moving, but this would be a good set up for a sedentary activity such as cooking or reading. The Velcro comes in handy if you want to attach the RA to your backpack strap or waist belt. Just cut the strips and customize your perfect fit.

Overall, the RA Adventure light is a powerful light that is a great alternative to a headlamp. The 120° light pattern allows you to move more fluidly through the dark. This light can be used for an endless amount of activities: early morning or late night runs, skiing up a mountain before the sun comes up, summer nighttime bouldering sessions, and even lighting up your campsite as you make dinner after an epic adventure. Don’t let daylight hours dictate your time to play – let the Kogalla RA light your way.
