How This Review Happened: We spent our precious Good Ride dollars to purchase this product and test it out.
Weight: 8.8 oz
Taste: My first few bites of the Chana Masala were really tasty. I thought it had a nice blend of spices, and everything seemed to blend together nicely. Then the chili peppers started to kick in and I had a hard time finishing because it seemed to get hotter with every bite. That being said, I am not someone who eats a lot of spicy food. So I’m rather sensitive to hotter cuisine.
Re-hydrate Time: The directions say 15-20 minutes based on altitude. We were at just under 10,000 ft when we made this. So we waited the full 20 minutes. There were a few chickpeas that could have cooked a bit longer but I was hungry and didn’t want to wait again. But for the most part, everything re-hydrated in 20 minutes at that altitude.
Overall: So if you are cool with spicy food, and like curry style dishes, you might really like the Backpackers Pantry Chana Masala. I thought it had a nice blend of spices and flavors I do think it would be helpful to add an indicator that the dish has some kick to it, so people like myself know to choose a different option. It was a filling vegetarian option for the backcountry. Backpackers Pantry does have taller bags than most other meal companies. So bring your long spork!
