Conditions: California spring conditions. Icy mornings, slushy afternoons.

Bindings:  Union Milan

Set Up: 15 front, 15 back, 20″ stance width

Sizes: 138, 141, 144, 147, 150

Flex: The Royal has a 3/10 flex that keeps it feeling forgiving and easy to bend. You can butter, twist and manipulate this board with ease. Good for learning how to turn and also good for practicing butter tricks and freestyle moves without consequence of catching an unexpected edge.

Camber Profile: Comes with a flat to rocker profile. Flat between the bindings going to rocker on the nose and tail. This gives you the catch free benefits of a rocker snowboard with a little added stability and edge hold from the flat section between the feet.

Base: Impact Extruded Base that is durable and easy to fix. You don’t need to be overly protective of this base, feel free to ride where you want to ride and get it fixed later. Not as fast as a sintered base, but keeps its speed even if you don’t wax it all the time.

On Snow Feel: The Royal is pretty loose when riding. It feels catch free. And when riding flat based (like off the chair lift) it can tend to spin a little bit on its own. If you are a beginner this takes a little practice to get used to. But the benefit is that it turns quite easily. So good for learning as well.

Steeps: Not the ideal board for steeps and technical terrain. The Royal would rather be cruising the blues and greens below. This doesn’t mean you can’t ride it on black runs, but there won’t be too much performance coming out if it when you do.

Edge Hold: The Royal has better edge hold than a board that has a full rocker profile. It doesn’t have any sidecut disruption to help it out in icy conditions however. So it feels best in soft to medium soft snow. It feels a little too loose when the snow gets icy.

Freestyle Personality: Good for learning tricks on if you are a beginner freestyle rider. It’s catch free and flexible so good for boxes and rails too. There is not much pop off of jumps or when popping ollies. It does ok, but you’d get more energy from a board with more positive camber.

Turning Experience: The Royal is fast to turn and easy to initiate turns with little effort. It is catch free and would be good for that rider that is still mastering the turn all over the mountain. It doesn’t carve that well and prefers a nice skidded turn. But it is still fun because of its playful personality to turn in different situations.

Powder: It is a true twin so you don’t get too much directional float when moving the bindings back for a powder day. (1.06″) The wider waist width allows for good surface area on the snow, and the rocker on the nose and tail help it to float as well. It won’t be ideal for deep days, but it would be good for learning to ride powder on a more mellow powder day.

Who Is This For?

The Rome Royal could work well for a beginner or intermediate rider. It is playful and fun to ride. This board likes to turn at medium speeds down blue and green runs. It likes to play in the park on small and medium features. And is friendly enough to learn how to turn on as well. It could be a good board for those on a budget too as the price tag won’t break the bank. The Royal also has a wider waist width, so it can accommodate someone with a bigger boot size as well.
