Summary
The Gnu Metal Gnuru is like a low budget version of the Impossible Series. It's EC2 BTX is stable between the feet and a good choice for those that want a more mountain freestyle friendly ride than the Gnu Carbon Credit.Where To Buy

On Snow Feel: Big surprise here. We thought the Gnu Metal Gnuru would be lacking but it was pretty fun. We thought it would be loose between the feet like the Attack Banana on the men’s side but it had the same stability as the Impossible Series and Space Case but it just doesn’t have the asym tech. Pretty easy to one foot and flat base and it’s got a pretty stable all-mountain freestyle ride that is much more at home on the mountain than the Gnu Carbon Credit. In good conditions, this feels stable and it only gets a little loose between the feet in harder conditions. This isn’t a bad all mountain freestyle board for the price. You can pick up some speed, slow down and butter, carve, stop in the pipe, hit the jump line and take on some moderate jibs. We like the Carbon Credit for a more freestyle focused board but if you want to ride the mountain as well as the park the Metal Gnuru is the call.
Powder: No Powder here but you can tell by the rocker that this will be fun taking a freestyle approach to moderate powder. If it’s anything like the Impossible series it’s going to be a fun easy to plane ride in powder.
Turn Initiation and Carving: Pretty easy edge to edge and a fun board to lay into wide to carving turns.
Speed: The Gnu Metal Gnuru has a base that isn’t super fast but still does a good job keeping the board moving forward and it’s predictable. As speed picks up the flex remains stable and holds pretty well for a hybrid rocker board.
Uneven Terrain: It handles most conditions you want to ride in and doesn’t pass too much of that bumpy icy snow back up to your feet if you are wearing bindings with good shock absorption.
Approximate Weight– Like all Mervin boards they are well built and very reliable but this happens to increase the weight. It’s still nothing terrible.
Edge Hold: The Edges seemed to be in good condition and so we think this is how the board rides but we can’t say for sure. Like the Impossible Series the Gnu Metal Gnuru seems to have one of the most mellow MTX side cuts of any board out there. This makes it a far better good conditions board than the more aggressive magnetraction boards. If you ride in anything from snowment to packed powder you will have a good time. If you ride in ice you might like something like the TRS.
Flex: Closer to the softer side of medium. It did not press or butter anywhere close to the Skate Banana. It seemed to have the same flex throughout the entire board.
Switch: This is a twin so it was just as easy to ride switch as it was regular.
Jibbing– Fun in the jib park but it feels a little better in the jumps and pipe.
Pipe: This is a pretty good pipe board. The TRS is better but it’s not bad at all.
Jumps: The Gnu Metal Gnuru is not super poppy but it can spring with moderate effort. Hitting small to medium kickers is great with this board.

GNU Metal Guru 2013
This board was my first board. Before this I used rentals, so no comparison to anything great. I found it very forgiving and predictable if that makes sense. I learned my first backside 3 on this, and progressed a little in the park. The only thing I can say is that this thing has shitty edge hold on ice, and can be sketchy in steep terrain as well. It's happier in the park or jibing around on greens and flatter places. The base is starting to not hold wax very well after about 60 days of riding. My next purchase will involve multiple demos to see what I like. Being a gear nerd, I can't wait. Peace, dudes.
