Positives

  • Construction
  • Board Feel in Ride Mode
  • Stiffer Flex for High Speeds

Negatives

  • Soft Nose Can Chatter
  • Not The Floatiest in Powder

Summary

To sum up the Jones Solution Split, I would say this is an incredibly versatile alpine mountaineering board. Turns out Jeremy Jones, the father of human-powered snowboard videos, knows a thing or two about making an ideal weapon for the ascent and the downhill. The nice 3D contour bevels in the nose and the tail allow this board to roll effortlessly side to side. If you're somebody who's newer to the sport of splitting but you're committed, you're going to find this board meets you where you are now and grows with you. This board is going to be compared to a lot of straight-on freeride boards. While they ride really well at high speed, they can be a handful at low speed. This board is not that. It handles very well, remains composed, and stays capable when you need to make moves and turns. It’s gonna bring a lot of smiles.

Approximate Weight

The Jones Mind Expander Split felt pretty normal weight-wise for this width and length. (We don’t put in the exact weight because with wood cores, there is no consistency in a board’s weight)

Sizing

Jones Solution Split Sizing
Jones Solution Split Sizing

Sizing on this board was kind of nervousness-inducing. You up at 161? I thought it was a lot of board—gonna kick my butt. Turns out, it couldn’t be further from the truth. It actually fit me quite well.

Jones’ philosophy on the Solution is that they want you to get a lot of your float from the length. So if you want a little bit more float, they want you to go longer. But this board is an amazing combination of features that just works really, really well.

Shape

Jones Solution Split Shape
Jones Solution Split Shape

We’re looking at a pretty narrow waist width, and we have a pretty long effective edge, and we have a nice solid amount of camber underfoot. So together, this gets a really nice performance out of this board. I would say the combination of waist width, a nice long 9.1m radius, and the 3D contouring on tip and tail just makes it really easy to ride. It’s really catch-free. And despite that long on-paper nine-meter radius, you can make any turn shape you want on this board.

Flex

Looking at the full board, we’ve got a pretty medium-ish to medium-firm, to even borderline stiff overall flex.

The tail is really rigid. A lot of that bowing you get comes from that much softer nose. This nose is not at all floppy, but it has considerably more flex. So this is a board that you can lay over. You can flat base. It keeps nice purchase on the snow. Don’t let the stiff flex fool you.

Splitboard Hardware

Taking this Solution apart, we have really nice Karakoram clips on the nose and tail. Super simple. Just flick these guys apart, detension, open up the nose. Flip, flip, and now you have your two pieces.

Climbing Performance

The disrupted sidecut on both the outer and inner edges gives you really solid purchase.

The key thing about this board is its width. We all love a wide board to surf soft snow, but skin tracks are not that nice. They’re usually set by skiers with much narrower boards and hard boots. This narrow, disrupted sidecut edge makes it really easy to get pressure on the inside and outside as you’re going uphill. I’m a big fan.

When you’re chasing ski buddies around, this honestly is a game-changer compared to every other split I’ve tried.

The board’s overall flex is medium, but it’s concentrated underfoot, giving you a little spring in your step. I do feel more efficient touring on this board versus most others. This board has a lot of early rise, so if you’re breaking trail, it’s easy to keep those tips up and not plow snow.

Downhill Performance

Jones Solution Split Turning

How does this board feel on the way down? I’m gonna be blunt with you. I didn’t really want to ride this board. I’m a tinkerer, and I like different shapes. But this thing blew my mind. Incredibly versatile. Easy to ride. Dialed into the terrain.

The combination of a long effective edge and narrow waist width makes it easy to get over on edge. It’s just an easy ride board. It holds like no tomorrow. It’s got some power. It won’t chatter at speed. Again, it’s a pure mountaineering mission tool. I was incredibly happy with it.

It has some forgiveness built in. You can rail it. You can power through it. But if you need to dial back, if you’re in sketchy terrain and nervous, don’t worry. The board’s not going to override you. You can make it do exactly what you want.

On Snow Feel

One word: composed. While the tip may flutter a little bit at super high speed, it doesn’t resonate back underfoot. It keeps control. The best thing I can say: no surprises.

When you’re out there on icy side hills and “no-fall” zones, this board won’t be your enemy. It’ll be your friend.

Base Glide

Jones Solution Split Base Glide

Base glide is definitely best in class. This 9000 series base glides better than anything I’ve ridden. All Jones bases are amazing. No problem at all here.

Final Thoughts

This is, in summary, an incredibly versatile all-mountaineering board designed to take you to the most amazing peaks, the most amazing downhills, and the most amazing times with your friends and community. Hope you have a blast on it.
