Trew Cosmic Snowboard Jacket Review: How It Fits And Who It Is For

How This Review Happened:  

Trew sent this to me to review in the studio and then send it back. Unfortunately, they couldn’t let me test it on snow. Fortunately I’ve tested a few Trew jackets in the past with the same construction.

Fit

The Large Trew Cosmic Primo fit pretty well.

Construction

Excellent construction. This jacket is built to last.

Waterproofing/Breathability

Normally, I would say that the Trew Cosmic Primo Jacket is pretty close to Gore-Tex, but with the change to Gore-Tex’s construction to be more environmentally compliant, this might be better now. In testing the same type of 3 Layer Trew Jacket in the past it did a great job keeping wet snow out. I could even rain ride a little. Their never felt to be a lot of breathability but cold winds never got through and there are massive pit zips. I prefer this burly construction over light, breathable and sometimes not that wind proof.

Hood/Helmet Compatibilty

The Trew Cosmic Primo Jacket has a contoured hood that has lots of room for most helmet sizes. I’m a medium helmet and it fits in there super well. I don’t have to worry about not being able to turn my head to make sure I won’t get hit or hit someone. It also has a great fit around the goggles when tightened to completely seal out the elements.

Cuff/Glove Compatibility

The cuff slides easily over the glove and can tighten pretty well if you want to put the glove over the cuff.

Pit Zips

I love open-pit zips and personally prefer them over meshed zips. They can get snow in, though, but I found that even just zipping at the pit and only leaving it a little open is still better than a fully open mesh zip.

Pockets

Trew didn’t skip on pockets with the Cosmic Primo and you have 5 outer plus a few inner. The waist pockets are huge.

Powder Skirt

There is nothing better than a zip away pow skirt for those that wear bibs or just don’t like them like I do.

Conclusion

Overall, The Smith Cosmic Primo Jacket is a good solution. I would have loved to test it on snow and compared it to the older Gore-Tex 3 Layer, but in the past, this held up well. This year, Gore-Tex Changed to be more environmentally compliant and doesn’t have the waterproofing it used to have. They are already working on a new technology to replace what’s coming out in 2025, but at the time I write this, you can get more protection from Trew now than new/environmentally compliant Gore-Tex.
