How The Sea to Summit Spark Ultralight Sleeping Bag Review Happened:
I borrowed this for an extended demo and sent it back.
Size: Large
Days: 5
Conditions: Nights in the low teens and mid-twenties.
Reviewer: Davey (Size 12, 240lbs, 6’4”)
Sleeping Bag: Sea to Summit Spark SP Sleeping Bag
Sleeping Bag Liner: Sea to Summit Xtreme Liner
Sizing
I am 6’3.5”, 245 lbs. The long size of the Spark Ultralight sleeping bag fit me excellently. There was enough length to fit somebody up to 6’6”. I was a little tight in the upper torso/shoulders area, but that is to be somewhat expected for a cold-weather mummy bag.
Warmth
**I want to clarify that I run hot at night. If you get cold easily, my experience might differ from yours.
The Spark Ultralight sleeping bag has RDS-certified 850 plus Goose down insulation. The bag I tested was rated for 5 degrees Fahrenheit. This bag is toasty. It has great temperature control. It trapped my body heat and kept me warm. I was not cold at all on my first bike-packing trip where it got into the mid-twenties. On my split boarding trip, my feet started getting cold once the temps fell into the teens. Granted, I was not wearing socks because they were soaking wet. If you had an extra thick pair of wool socks, you’ll most likely be good. I used the Sea to Summit Extreme Reactor Liner and it warmed my feet up, along with the rest of my body, to very comfortable temperatures. I was almost too hot with the liner and the mummy bag fully sealed around my head.
Weight
The long-size 5-degree Fahrenheit Spark Ultralight sleeping bag weighs 1204g or 2.6 lbs. While carrying it in a backpack, I didn’t notice its weight at all.
Zipper
Extremely smooth zippers. So smooth it blew my socks off in the review video. Sleeping bags have a lot of extra fabric around the zipper that can get caught and this zipper moved up and down seamlessly.
Liner
The Sea To Summit Spark Ultralight Sleeping Bag has a 7-deneir nylon that is comfortable to the touch. It does not get overly sticky to your skin if you sleep without a shirt or pants.
Hood Compatability
The hood on this bag has great articulation. It wraps around your head nicely. It has a snug fit without being restricted once tightened. The synch and loop pull system to tighten the hood is simple and smooth to operate. I like the feature of the button flap that keeps the hood closed even when the sleeping bag is unzipped. This allows you to vent your body heat without disrupting your hood.
Exterior Fabric
The Sea To Summit Spark Ultralight Sleeping Bag has a 10-deneir nylon with a water-repellent finish.
Packability
Extremely packable. Stuffs into the stuff sack very easily. Once the loft is fully deflated, this bag packs down to around a foot in length. The straps on the stuff sack are useful for tightening down extra tight and pushing out the last bit of loft.
Final Thoughts
I am very impressed with the Spark Ultralight sleeping bag. Very high-quality build, very high-quality materials, very high-quality product. This is one of the lightest sleeping bags out there for the temperature rating. Grab a cold-weather liner in case things get chilly and you have yourself a great, ultralight-weight sleeping bag that can handle basically 4 seasons of camping.
