Testing Conditions
Steph tested this repellent on several hikes during rainy season around Mammoth Lakes, CA. It was an unusually buggy season so it was great for trying out this Permethrin Fabric Treatment.
How To Use
It is easy to use. You simply spray all over any fabric gear you will be using on your adventure. (Don’t spray it while you are using the gear). You just spray a nice even coverage, until you can see the spray change the color of the fabric a bit. Let the gear dry, and use it as normal.
The spray has no odor. I think this is awesome. Bug spray normally has quite a strong odor. So this is nice.
I could see the spray on my gear when it was wet, but once it dried I couldn’t tell it was on there. The spray bottle provides a very even application.
Effectiveness
The Permethrin spray is supposed to last up to 6 weeks, or 6 washes on gear. They do say that more exposure to sun or uv rays can weaken the bond a bit.
So far I have used the spray for 2 weeks, and it still seems effective.
We have had a particular buggy season here in the Eastern Sierra this year. Due to record snow melt and a very rainy summer, the bugs are out in full force. Normally I am completely eaten alive when we have mosquitos around. And while using this on my hikes, I wasn’t as bothered by mosquitoes as I normally am. I also, somehow, miraculously came out of all of my hikes with only 1 or 2 bites. I also used the Sawyer bug spray on my exposed skin like my hands and neck.
Overall
The Sawyer Permethrin Fabric Treatment has seemed to work really well against the bugs I’ve been up against this summer. They still buzzed around, but hardly ever landed or bit me. This treatment is simple to use, and I love the idea of just always having anti-bug coverage on my gear. It has been very effective for me on my hikes.
I used about 1/4 of the bottle to treat my outerwear shell, my shoes, and my backpack. Seems like one bottle goes a long way. This will definitely be going onto my tent and sleeping hammock as well.
