How This Review Happened:

Borrowed this for an extended demo and I haven’t sent it back.
Size: Medium and Large
Days: 20+
Water Temp: 34F to 49F
Air Temps: 15F to 75F with some cold windy days in there as well.

How It Was Tested

I often tested them solo but did a few days with the O’Neill Psycho Tech 3mm glove on one hand and the Hotline on the other to see how they both compared.

Fit/Sizing

James’ Glove Specs
Medium with Most Large with some
Wrist to Middle Finger: 19 cm
Circumference around Knuckles: 22.5 cm

The medium usually fits me really well but with Hotline the Large glove is a better fit for me. This is pretty much the exact opposite of how their Wetsuits fit me. With the UHC I tried a LS and it was too baggy. I think the size Medium would better fit my specs where I normally wear a L, LS or XLS from other brands.

Grip/Dexterity

The silicone on the Hotline 3mm Plush Thermal Glove is very grippy but the slight webbing near the fingers makes it a bit less grippy than my O’Neill Psycho Tech 3mm gloves when it comes to holding my little river wave boards for acid drops. For just dropping in on an ocean wave it is more than fine and I prefer the Hotline. I’ll take that little bit extra paddle power it offers.

Warmth

The Hotline 3mm Plush Thermal Glove is pretty warm for a 3mm and it was pretty much all I needed. Sometimes I could use a 5mm when it was freezing cold but with a super warm 6/5/4 Feral wetsuit and 7mm Hotline Booties I was good enough. On same day tests with the O’Neill glove it did very well. I would say only when it was windy did I feel the rubber outer coating on the O’Neill do a little better.

Durability

So at about Day 15 on the Hotline 3mm Plush Thermal Glove I did get a little nick in the glove from putting my hands on the wall. It held up pretty well compared to other gloves I’ve tested that had even more little nicks than this. The only glove that did better for me was the O’Neill but only by a little bit. That got nicks too though. The wall at my local riverwave isn’t easy on gloves. I would like to see a little more durable material on the palm though.

Conclusion

Overall, the Hotline 3mm Plush Thermal Glove is a great first addition to their line. I think this is a very recommendable glove for anyone who ocean surfs or paddles a lot.
