Rome Agent Rocker 2017 - 2010 Review by The Good Ride

You can barely use the word Rocker in the Rome Agent Rocker 2016 and 2017 models. The camber comes all the way down to the ground and the rocker doesn’t touch. It’s a much more stable, poppy and aggressive ride but is also lost it’s catch-free ride and float in powder.

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  We do make money from the “Where To Buy” links, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average riders’ perspective.

Size: 157
Days:  3
Conditions: Mainly good snow but some hard spots here and there.
Riders: James, Peter, Jimbo,
Boots: Burton SLX, Salomon F3.0, Burton Fiend LTD,
Bindings: Burton Cartel, Burton Genesis, Burton DiodeUnion Atlas
Set Up: Centered 15 Front -15 back

Approximate Weight: Feels a bit on the light side of normal.

On Snow Feel:  This should not be called the “Agent Rocker” It’s not a hybrid rocker board anymore.  It’s now an aggressive mostly camber ride that’s got lots of springy camber going on from tip to tail with only a little passive rocker between the feet that sits above the snow until weighted.

Powder: No longer the board it used to be in powder. Now it’s a lot of work to keep the nose/tail up and only a little bit better than traditional camber.

Turn Initiation: Very quick lively and fun.  Usually, boards with a 25.5 waist width take more work to turn for my size 9 boots and same goes for Peter with his 8.5’s but this was responsive and we felt just like Jimbo did with his 10.5 boots.

Skidded Turns: Not a board for those who make lot’s of skidded turns. It will catch lots of edges. It is for those that like to make proper turns.

Carving: What a carver and I think I like this more than the camber version. So much camber and spring out of the turns!

Speed: Pretty good for mountain speed and you can bomb with this.

Uneven Terrain: Not bad here either.

Edge Hold:  That quick rip sidecut not only enhances a carve but it also makes for better edge hold. Very good grip and it’s almost there with magnetraction without being grabby.

Flex:  Nice medium snappy lively flex.  You can butter but it takes a bit of work.

Switch: Would almost like to see this become a true twin but it’s not bad switch. After a few days, you will be so used to it that it will be pretty easy.

Jibbing: Not the best jibber due to it’s snappy mid/flex but it’s doable if you are a good jibber.

Pipe: What a fun board for an advanced to expert pipe rider. Lot’s of consequence if you fuck up but still great if you stay on your game. It is the kind of board that will drive really well from wall to wall and provides a lot of spring to launch out.

Overall this board has some limitations when it comes to being forgiving and floating in powder but the lively feel underfoot and carving ability make this a really fun aggressive all mountain freestyle ride. If you have a powder board this might be a great call.

Rome Agent Rocker Past Reviews

2015 and Below Rome Agent Rocker Review

The Rome Agent Rocker is one of those very versatile all mountain freestyle rides. It’s one of those do anything boards and one of it’s best qualities is it’s excellent pop. Also it has a rather unique sidecut that allows you to make better wide radius to carving tuns than most hybrid rocker boards.

2014 and 2015 Rome Agent Rocker Review

The 2014 and 2015 Rome Agent Rocker changed up it’s camber profile and it’s not as loose between the feet any more. It’s got a more stable ride. It also helped make the ride better at speed, flat basing, one footing and such. The good thing is it still has the same amount of pop. It makes the 2014 a lot better than the previous models.

Size: 155
Days: 3
Conditions: Soft snow with some patches of hard pack and softer practically perfect but still pretty fast sierra snow.
Riders: James
Boots: Burton Imperial, Burton Hail, Nike Lunarendore
Bindings: Burton Genesis, Burton Malavita, Flux DS,
Set Up: Centered 15 front -15 back

Weight: 5.8lbs Size 155

On Snow Feel: Way more stable between the feet than previous years that went from loose to almost stable. It’s now very close to Rides like the TRS XC2 BTX and it has a much more mountain/groomer friendly feel this year.

Powder: Only a little powder with this board but the tip/tail still stick up and don’t want to go down. I’d rather see a set back here to make this board much more floaty for the directional rider in powder but Rome seems to like this centered. I think this board should either become a twin and stay centered or keep the shape and set it back -15 to -20 on the board.

Turn Initiation and Carving: Very easy edge to edge and normally boards like this get worse the more the board is engaged in a wider radius turn but this gets better and carves almost as good as some camber boards I have tried. When I first got this board I was expecting the older models with the more augmented rocker betweent the feet but I ended up making lots of carving turns and loving it.

Speed: Speed has improved this year. It’s more stable and the base is very fast. It picks up speed quickly and keeps it’s speed in the flats.

Uneven Terrain: Really good in bumpy uneven snow even with bindings with less shock absorption.

Edge Hold: For most riders out there this is the perfect amount of edge hold. They call it quickrip and it’s kind of like combining 2 side cuts. What it does that makes the edge hold so great is give a little extension after the bindings that grips very well. You can handle hard snowment days and even hang in some ice if the edges are sharp but it’s not an ice specialist. It doesn’t grab in softer wet snow either so it’s the closest you can get to an all conditions ride.

Flex: Very playful and poppy while still being easy to butter. Even though my weight over powered the 155 I bet even a 159 would still be easy to butter it up.

Switch: The tip and tail are more into play all the time with the more flat/stable profile so they give you a little more of a twinish feel that borders on great but isn’t as easy as past years. You for sure get use to it and it’s pretty easy but it’s not like a true twin.

Jibbing: I’ve been too preoccupied with enjoying a good carving turn in the early snow but it seems like with dulled out edges the flatter profile will work better on rails n such. I hit a little box or 2 in the early season and it’s been fine.

Pipe: No pipe up but it’s going to drive better wall to wall and be less loose between the feet in the icy pipe. Also the edge hold is really solid so it will hold well.

Jumps: It seems about the same as the older models when it comes to snapping up an ollie of good size. It’s got a more stable approach to kickers as well. It’s not as forgiving but it still has the tip/tail elevated so it’s more forgiving than camber and the same as many hybrid shapes out there.

I’d say my only complaint with the Agent Rocker is it’s not quite an all mountain board and it’s not quite an all mountain freestyle board. I’d like to see them either make this a twin or give this twinish/slightly directional shape a set back so its a super easy directional ride in powder. If you make it a twin it would be an even better all mountain freestyle board and if you give it a set back it would be a great all mountain board. Still this is a fun board and we have a lot of fun with this every time we ride it.

2013 and Below Rome Agent Rocker Review

Size:157

Days: 100+
Conditions: Every Kind of Condition
Riders: James, Jimbo (owned it) and Peter
Bindings: Burton Cartel Re:Flex, Burton Diode, Rome Mob, Rome 390 Boss, Union Atlas
Boots: Burton SLX, Burton Ion, Burton Imperial, Nike Kaiju and Rome Libertine Pure Flex.
Set Up- Centered Stance, 22-23″ wide 15 front -15 back.

The Rome Agent Rocker is a very unique board. On paper is seems very similar to many of the hybrid rocker boards from Lib-Tech, Gnu, Never Summer and Burton. If you look closer you will see it has a unique side cut that makes the ride different than all the other hybrid rocker boards we tried. Rome calls it “QuickRip” and it is difficult to describe. There is a very small radius side cut that extends a bit past the feet.  It also extends out from the edge a bit to create better edge hold Then there is a second side cut after that. Here is a picture from Rome that describes it better.  When you look at the side cut this extension after the bindings is rather visible.

We find this tech to be a new approach to riding a hybrid rocker board and very versitile compared to other hybrid rocker boards.  It has a loose feel when not on edge and a very aggressive all mountain feel when laying into a carve.

There use to be a Rome Agent 1985 in 2010 but it is not anything like the new Agent Rocker.  It is a Hybrid Rocker version of the original Agent.  You get better pow riding and a more forgiving ride but you sacrifice some stability. .  All in All the Agent Rocker has made a large step forward from the Agent 1985 of 2010 and we are very impressed with the ride. After the major 2011 upgrade very little changed with the 2012 to the point where very little has changed except for a little extra pop. The 2013 Agent Rocker is almost exactly the same.

On Snow Feel– We found this to suit 2 moods. If you want to cruise, play around, butter and make easy turns the Rome Agent Rocker will accommodate you.  If you want to be a bit more aggressive and lay into some carves the Agent Rocker will work pretty well for hybrid rocker. The one thing we would like to see is a bit more stability between the feet.  There is a lot of rocker going on here and it makes for a very loose ride between the feet.  This is a positive and also a negative in some cases.  Most will like this because it’s very forgiving for the flex and it gives the board a lot of pop but some might want an easier board to one foot off the chair and flat base long cat tracks. The Rome Agent Rocker is a versatile board that likes to butter about as much as it likes to carve and ollie around the mountain.  In the Park it’s at home in the pipe, jump line and to a lesser extent the jib park.

Powder: This is about as fun as a twin like board with a centered stance can get in powder.  The serious bend between the feet makes the Agent Rocker a very floaty ride.  It’s no powder specific board but about the best you can do for a one board quiver.  We didn’t have a powder day but have on other Rome rocker boards very similar to this and have to say it’s a pretty easy ride.  We’d like to see a bit of a set back stance like a -20mm or even -10mm to make the performance even better for directional powder riding.  Lets face it many of us just don’t take on a switch/freestyle approach on powder days and it would be nice to have the option for those that like directional set back riding when it’s deep.

Turn Initiation and Carving– We touched on this a bit on the Groomer section but lets elaborate.  To start off with “Quickrip” is not a gimmick.  When it comes to making short quick turns this board is about as easy as it gets.  The Agent is very loose and very easy to transition from edge to edge but we might say it’s almost too loose compared to some of the other hybrid rocker boards we tried.  As you lean into the turn to make a wider turn you start to feel the side cut engage.  If you lay into a carve you feel like you are riding a different board and you almost get a surprise as the side cut grips in and accelerates your turn.  We both really liked it but can’t say for certain that it’s for everyone. All we can say is we had as much or more fun carving with the Agent Rocker as we did with the Never Summer SL R, Lib Tech TRS C2 BTX, and more fun than the Burton Custom Flying V Rocker.

Speed: The Agent Rocker has a very fast base and picks up speed very fast.  We like this for hitting a little jump right near the chair or getting up speed for hits in the park.  The serious rocker makes for a bit of a loose ride unless you are comitted to an edge so this isn’t the best for bombing a hill.  There is also some chatter you can experience at higher speeds.  This is not ideal if you are a bomber rider.

Uneven Snow– This works well in bumpy terrain and handles it very well.

Approximate Weight– This isn’t a feather weight but it’s definitely light.  The Agent Rocker is well built though and looks like it will last a 100 day season of average to rough riding.

Edge Hold: The “Quickrip” side cut really increases edge hold.  We haven’t been on ice but found this board to be pretty grippy in snowment conditions. It’s right there with Never Summer’s side cut but we feel a step down from Magnetraction side cuts.  Still this will perform well in just about any condition the average rider will want to be out on and we never felt like the edge wanted to give up on us.

Flex: This is pretty much the middle ground of medium but due to the large amount of rocker the Rome Agent Rocker has a softer feel.  Really fun to butter around if you want to slow down and play on the mountain.

Switch: This is a Twin like directional board so the shape is almost like a directional twin.  It’s a little different switch but it’s still very easy to ride either direction.  The centered stance makes it easier to ride switch but it’s still different.

Jibbing– There are better boards out there but if you are in a jibbing mood you can do it all day if you need to. To most this will lean to the average side of good but it’s still not bad to hit a rail or 2.  If you are hitting more technical kinked rails and boxes you will want more but if you slide over the average rail in the park the Agent Rocker won’t let you down.

Pipe: There is enough edge hold to get up and down the pipe.  The Agent Rocker also has a lot of forgiveness with it’s rocker.  We don’t go big in the pipe but we had fun transitioning from wall to wall.

Jumps: The Rome Agent Rocker is very poppy.  We could generate our own air just about anywhere on the mountain and found this to be one of our favorite boards for springing off any bump we could find on a groomed run.  Like the pipe we dont go that big in the park but we could tell this could be fun with just about any size kicker.  We didn’t notice too much difference between the 2011 and 2012 boards in terms of pop but one of the riders did feel the 2012 was a little more popy.  It’s always hard to tell.

Our only real complaint about the Rome Agent Rocker is I’d like to see them either make this a true twin or give it a set back.  As it stands now this could be an even more versatile board if they gave it a 15mm to 20mm set back for those that like directional powder riding.  Regardless of our complaint Its still a great ride and a good ride favorite.

This board really gets it done all over. Charges hard on the groomers with minimal chatter on spring ice. Did amazing in 7" powder and even better once everything had been chewed up. Following day took in to the mogul fields on the North Peak in Keystone and it just flowed in and out of the trees and moguls so smoothly. Just surfed in and out of them with minimal effort. Very forgiving and just enough flex to get any and everywhere on the mountain.

Just buy it.

This is one of the only true all-mountain boards on the market. I absolutely love riding this deck. The board holds its own in the park, not necessarily as playful as a true jibber may want but it jibs really well, flexes in the right places and doesn't hang-up real easy. This board pops lips so well, those hot rods really give you a nice kick. It's super light for spins and grabs. For how nice it is in the park it shines even more while out free-riding. Carves great, super easy and fast edge to edge but holds nice through big carves. cuts real fast to go hit features you see out of the corner of your eye and if you get a sloppy landing it is really easy to save yourself. Something about those rods allows you to easily save yourself from tail heavy washouts. Those rods kind of make for interesting butters though, adds an interesting stiffness in the tail that you have to balance on but i've learned to love it. Pow with this thing is a dream for a twin mount. The first day I got deep with this deck was crazy, the nose lifts right up and inspires a lot of confidence when jumping and carving on steep powder. On the flip side I've also had good experience with ice on this guy, famous east coast ice that is, holds an edge well but you still have to know what you're doing. Also incredibly stable through choppy snow, once the powder gets tracked and moguled this board is still so much fun to bounce around chowder in. I would recommend this board to any intermediate/advanced rider who wants to literally do it all and love every minute of it. In the video you say you would want to see the stance set back but I hope Rome never sets this stance back. I think the twin mount but twinish shape is truly the charm of this deck, It gives you downhill power with the ability to still ride switch confidently, which is something I believe is necessary for a true all mountain board. It is honestly the reason I bought the board, it is the only deck I found that offers a directional sidecut with a twin mount that seemed to be worth something.

I have a '13 155 and it is the most fun board I have ridden to date. Its light and poppy, easy to turn and manouver at slow speeds and holds and awesome carve up to moderate speeds (gets a bit washy after that). I got this to replace my Riders Choice. Its not quite as loose as the RC and a bit faster and poppier. Slays the pow pretty good for a centered up twinish board to. I ride this board every day its not dumping pow, and even some days it is when i feel like getting a little more freestyle in the soft stuff.

haven't tried the '14, but can recommend the Agent Rocker whole heartedly.
