K2 UFO 2014 - 2013 Review by The Good Ride

The K2 UFO is bulky but super comfortable and has a great locked in feel around the ankle.  Although it doesn’t have a reduced footprint which many of us really like these days The UFO does offer great comfort, response and heel hold.

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  No one is perfect and we do make money from the “Where To Buy” links below, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average riders’ perspective.

Flex:  This has a pretty stiff flex but it does offer up a little more give than some of the stiffest boots in their line.

Comfort:  You can’t argue K2’s comfort and even with BOA cables running near the liner it’s still usually free of pressure points for most riders. Every foot is different but most find K2 boots like the UFO very comfortable. We did.

Heel Hold:  This isn’t a 3 BOA system like the Thraxis but it still has phenomenal heel hold that really wraps your ankle. The combination of the liner BOA and the outer BOA really holds it in.

Adjustability:  Pretty quick in and out but there is no upper and lower adjustability.  You have 2 BOA’s working pretty much the same place so you get this boot if you want to lock in your ankle but you don’t get it for separate adjustability.

Flex Retention:  These boots don’t have much going on with ankle articulation but they have something called Endo Construction where they put in a Urethane endoskeleton that makes the boot last for a very long time.  The 100+ day a year rider will really enjoy this tech and it lasts for a long time.

Response:  Very responsive and it still isn’t too unforgiving.

Traction:  The K2 UFO has an excellent Vibram sole.  All you have to say is Vibram and then it’s a pretty good bet the boot will have solid traction.

Shock Absorption:  K2 boots are bulky but very shock absorbent and can make a flat landing easier than it could be.

2013 k2 UFO Review

So let’s do a shit sandwich on this and put the bad in the middle.  Many boot companies are making reduced footprint boots and K2 isn’t one of them. The reduced footprint makes it easier to fit into narrower waist boards and smaller bindings.  There is also poor upper and lower adjustability for a boot of this price. It’s just inner and outer so you are stuck with the same upper and lower flex. So now lets finish with the good.  The heel hold is exceptional, the heel is super shock absorbent and the boot is increadibly comfortable. Most boot companies increase the flex longevity by ankle articulation.  Well K2 came up with a pretty good idea that uses Urethane in most of the shell of the boot to retain the original flex.  The UFO will last a long time.  So this boot isn’t perfect but it does have more good than bad.

Great Seasonaires Boot

A solid boot to use all season. Mine are going to last two seasons, so just over 100 days, but the flex went from Med/Stiff to Med after 50 days. Vibram sole lets you walk up the mountain with confidence. MAterials are built to last. Super fast to put on, they need re-tightening a couple of times as they warm up too. But they are soooo comfortable. Lot's of the instructors use them because of the comfort and durability. Got to say though in deep powder and heavy snow I would like more heel lock.
