Rome Mod Rocker 2018 - 2012 Review by The Good Ride

The Rome Mod Rocker is basically the camber Rome Mod but flattened in the middle and bent up at the tip/tail AKA a flat/rocker profile. That makes for a much easier float in powder and it has a more forgiving ride compared to the camber mod.  This is still not a mellow ride though.  It’s pretty aggressive especially considering it’s flat to rocker shape.

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  We do make money from the “Where To Buy” links, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average riders’ perspective.

The 2015 and 2016 Mod Rocker has had an upgrade to the design but the same general ride is there.  The tip/tail look a little more phallic instead of blunted and the waist width’s become progressively wider as they get longer so it can now work better for those that are more of in between regular and mid/wide sizes.  Or if you are regular and just want a faster more stable platform going straight this will work too.

Conditions: Hard to semi-soft groomers. Good Sierra Snow and Spring conditions that were hard in the morning slowly transitioning to slush.

Set Up- 23″ Wide, centered, 15 front -15 back

With most rocker or hybrid boards in Romes line, they now have the “quickrip” sidecut.  It makes for better edge hold than the older rocker boards and it also makes it more fun to carve than a standard flat to rocker board.  The pop from the Mod Rocker isn’t as good as the Mod Camber when making an ollie or carve but it’s pretty poppy for a flat/rocker board.  So you lose some pop but get a better float in powder.  Almost everything else has similar performance with a slightly different feel. The Mod Rocker offers a slightly less aggressive ride than the Mod Camber and it’s no mellow flat/rocker board.  You can still push it.

On Snow Feel:  The Rome Mod Rocker is more at home in the park but it has the capability to handle riding the mountain as well. It can hit any groomer regular or switch at any speed. The Mod Camber was a little more fun because there was a little more spring in the board but both had a stable/fast feel there that was good but lacking that fun feeling that the Anthem can provide. The Mod Rocker is more forgiving.

Powder: It’s a twin with a centered stance so this is for only the more advanced riders that like to ride switch as well as regular in powder. It does point up instead of down and the flat middle section planes well in powder.  It’s definitely an easier ride than the Mod Camber. Both are good Powder Jump boards but both have different personalities.  The camber takes some work and solid powder riding skills to keep afloat.  The Mod Rocker is more forgiving, floats easier and will allow any level rider to push it more with less consequence.

Turn Initiation and Carving- The wider waist and flat shape was more effort compared to other boards of this shape  It does ride bigger than boards it’s the size and can turn at high speed better than most small twins.  The camber Mod is definitely more work than the Mod Rocker but there is still some work to do when making a quick edge to edge transitions.  When making wide arcing turns the Mod Rocker is not quite the Mod Camber but it does rather well thanks to their fun sidecut. It’s hard to transform a flat to rocker board into something that carves well but we must tip the cap to the quick rip side cut. It makes what is usually dull and not that fun to carve a little better.  We feel Quickrip is best with hybrid rocker for adding a lot of life to a carve and a little is better than nothing for a flat to rocker board.

Speed: This is about as fast as a true twin can get. This thing can bomb just like the Camber model!  The Flat stiff midsection of this board really absorbs chatter and likes to go straight. The base is fast as well and the ride is stable between the feet. There are no issues flat basing. No real difference here when it comes to this or the camber model.

Uneven Terrain: pretty good but not amazing when it comes to dealing with bumpy snow.

Approximate Weight– We don’t scale up and probably never will.  There is just too many board to weigh and it’s really not that important to the ride. Our guess would be this is a featherweight bordering on flyweight because it’s just really easy to pick up.  Even with bindings on it’s light.  If you have issues with the lower body on the chair this is going to feel really good on you.

Edge Hold:  The flat profile between the feet along with the little extra something in the sidecut called quickrip holds an edge better than the camber Mod.  It’s no magnetraction or dedicated ice board but it creates very confidence inspiring grip in conditions where many boards won’t.

Flex: It’s pretty stiff in the middle but very soft at the tip and tail.

Jibbing- This is a pretty light board not really made for a day in and day out punishment in the jib park. Still the flat to rocker camber profile is rather easy to slide around a little despite it’s stiffer flex.

Pipe: The Quick Rip Side Cut makes for pretty good edge hold and it’s pretty forgiving going up and down in the pipe but it’s missing a little something in the wall to wall carves that makes it a perfect pipe board. It’s hard to put a finger on but it seemed like the side cut was more suited for a smooth straight take off on a jump than a carving turns up an icy pipe wall.

Jumps: Just like the Mod Camber the Mod Rocker has that stable wanna go straight feeling of this board gives you a lot more confidence when you are about to hit a big kicker or kicker for any size for that matter. We found the Rocker to just not have the spring that the camber board does but its spring is decent.  We like the more forgiving ride though for those that are pushing it more or for those that are not as technical.  This is about as good as the Mod Camber when lapping the roller coaster line in the park or hitting backcountry kickers but the Ollie power is not as good as the Mod Camber.

The Mod Rocker is a more forgiving ride than the Mod Camber but it still has an aggressive feel for its shape and camber profile. It’s a little more fun for most in powder and a little easier to turn but it’s lacking the pop that the Mod has.

Rome Mod Rocker

This is a fun board. There was a bit of a learning curve when first getting on it due to the turn initiation of the QuickRip side cut. I found that the sidecut worked exactly as it was described, only used the smaller radius contact points for short radius, quick turns. This felt very quick edge to edge and the edge hold was great. The board also performs well on hard pack groomers at higher speeds. You can really tell when the larger radius contact points kick in and the hold feels just as solid as it does at lower speeds. The only downside is the in-between speeds. At medium speeds, there is inconsistency in the contact points. This is hard to get used to at first because each turn can have a different feel and at times can feel like there is toe or heel drag. You get used to this after a day or two of riding and figure out the proper edge angles to determine which contact points engage.

The flat camber of this board provides pretty good float even in very light powder with a centered stance. This board gives a very solid ride all around and the description from Rome of somewhere between powerful and very powerful is quite accurate. Has plenty of pop and spring between turns. It easy to get off the ground and landing is a piece of cake on the flat camber. The Mod Rocker is a perfect all around board that can be ridden easily all over the mountain forward and switch. After a day or two of adjusting to the variable edges, you will never remember what it felt like to only have two contact points.
