K2 Eighty Seven 2019 - 2017 Review by The Good Ride

The first time we tried the K2 Eighty-Seven in 2017, Peter hated and I thought was ok but felt really chattery.  I took it out again in late spring/early summer conditions to find that the ride was much better a year later.  Maybe it was the conditions before or maybe there were some tweaks to the production model from the 2017 demo we tried but regardless it was a more fun ride.  So here is my take after a morning on it thanks to Gravity Sports at Mt. Bachelor. Overall it had a good feel underfoot and it’s a pretty recommendable ride for those that want a solid slashy ride on powder and groomers.

The 2019 k2 Eighty-Seven hasn’t changed from the 2018 so the 2018 review still stands. Only thing I noticed is they added a 153 and 157 to the mix.

Here is a look at the camber profile.

I also did a quick measurement of the set back on board compared to the set back on side cut.  At a 22.75″ stance width you can get as far as 7″ back on board with normal disc bindings and a little further with mini discs.

K2 Eighty Seven Past Reviews

The K2 Eighty Seven is a board that is described as the board you take on a one week trip to satisfy all your needs.  Peter feels the Eighty Seven should be 86’d and I felt it wasn’t a terrible board but not one I’d want in my quiver on a trip and especially so with a $600 price point.

Eighty Seven such a pleasure

Last year I bought a Burton Skeleton Key 158 (and my wife a Daytrader 150) as pist/off pist supplements to our Libtec Orca 153 (soo goood) and Jones Howercraft 150 (also sooo goood). We both found these Burtons too damp and lacking grip on hard snow for carving so I replacem mine with a Yes Optimistic 154cm 2019.

The Optimistic was a handful though., demanding a lot of effort and near perfect conditions. Speed checks, skidding and uneven terrain was problematic and killed my old battle born knees and feets.

So despite your rather mellow review of the K2 Eighty Seven I could not resist a 50% offer on a new 155cm 2017. My wife got the same as the K2 Wildhart 2017 146cm.

And what a fun we have on these now, on groomers in Livigno, Italy, waiting for the next dump. Despite same width as the Optimistic the 87 feels much smaller and lighter. It is also thinner. We can now cruise and carve, speed check still in the carves, bail out to skidding turns and go really steep with the feeling of having a much narrower board, with very little effort. They also cut through uneven terrain very well due to the thin profile. So more in line with your reviews of the K2 Simple Pleasure (same board basically?).

We have not tried them in powder yet but we have alternatives for the real deep days anyway so...
