Summary

The Jones Mountain Twin LTD is the same shape and specs as the regular Jones Mountain Twin but with a wood top sheet. Upon first look of the specs and design it seems like it's not going to be that different than the regular twin but actually the wood top sheet gives the LTD a more aggressive and less playful personality than the regular Jones Mountain Twin.

The Jones Mountain Twin LTD Written Review Review by The Good Ride

Here is the Jones Mountain Twin LTD Snowboard Review from an exceptionally average and objective perspective.

FYI the bindings (Genesis and Diode) were switched half way through the day when I did this side by side comparison.

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  We do make money from the “Where To Buy” links, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average riders’ perspective.

Size: 157
Days: 4
Conditions:  Pretty much all good snow with some mornings that had hard snow that slowly transitioned to slush.
Riders: James, Peter, Jimbo, Stephen, Mary, Kristi, Ginger, Mike,
Boots:  Burton Imperial, Burton HailBurton SLXNike LunarendorSalomon Synapse,
Bindings: Burton Cartel, Burton Genesis, Burton DiodeFlux SF, Union Factory
Set Up: Centered approx 23″ wide 15 front -12 back.  Set back approx 23″ wide 15 front -6 back.  And a ride with Mary’s weird ass set up.

So we rode this at a demo and then I borrowed it for a week to do a good comparison between this and the standard Twin.  I had a 157 LTD and my regular 157 Twin so it was pretty close to being apples to apples. The only difference I had the 2014 Jones Mtn Twin that had the older core. The wood top sheet of the LTD gives a much more chatter free damp feeling than the regular Mtn Twin but it seems to take away the lively fun personality that we love with the regular MountainTwin.  Even with the older less lively core.  Don’t get me wrong it’s not a bad board but it just seems like you sacrifice the slower speed lively playful feel of the standard model to get less chatter at speed. For some, it’s worth it but I think most might still prefer the standard model.

Approximate Weight: Felt normal and I’m not sure but a smidge heavier than the regular Jones Mountain Twin.

On Snow Feel:  Same stable predictable ride as the regular twin that’s easy to one foot and flat base however it didn’t feel as lively or playful.  It had a bit of a dull feel to it.

Turn Initiation: Same kind of middle ground turn initiation that the regular model has except it feels a little less lively.

Flex:  The flex rating is the same on the site but this feels stiffer than the regular Jones. Buttering and playing around at slow speeds was more fun with the standard model. The LTD had a more stubborn less lively feel buttering at slow speeds.

Edge Hold: Really solid edge hold that feels a smig better than the standard model that works from hard snow to powder without being grabby.  It’s a little better on ice than the standard model but it’s still not an ice specialist like boards with more aggressive magnetraction.

Powder: Same great easy float in powder.  I didn’t ride powder but it has the same exact shape and the same set back hybrid camber profile that really makes this board stand out against other boards in its peer group.  I’m thinking that the stiffer flex will help it bust through chunder and tracked up snow better than the regular Twin.

Carving: Same carving as the standard model.  It feels like you can lock into a carve at higher speeds a little bit better but none of us really felt a difference.

Speed: I went out with the regular twin and LTD on the same day and kept switching out the boards on the same run that took you through a mellow park and then to a long groomer with a pretty steep moderately long straight line run at the end.  I definitely noticed a difference between the two boards here.  Both seemed to go the same speed but the LTD barely had any chatter in the nose and tail where the standard model did.  If you like the forgiving nature of the Mtn Twin but want less chatter at speed then this could be a good choice. For speed I preferred

Uneven Terrain: There were a few runs where I took both Jones boards out that had some bumps and I’d say the standard model was a little easier than the regular model.

Switch: Same ride switch as the standard Mtn Twin that allows you to center it and ride switch almost the same as you do regular.

Jumps: I think that the LTD will be better for going big but it didn’t have the easy more lively ollie ability or small to mid jump feel that the standard Twin has. It felt like it was a little more work or just a little more dead underfoot than the standard Twin.

Jibbing: Neither boards are really strong jib boards but I felt that the boxes I hit were easier with the softer flexing regular Jones.

Pipe: No pipe play going on.  Most of the resorts didn’t have pipes this winter due to the lack of snow but I bet this would be good here and more accommodating for people who like to go bigger.

So all in all most of us didn’t find the magic in the LTD that we did with the regular Twin and I think that it might only appeal to a limited group of riders that like the idea of the Mountain Twin but feel less chatter at speed is more important than everything else. It’s still a good board but most of us prefer the standard model.

I’d like to see them try the LTD again but go with more carbon strips in the tip/tail and maybe lose the wood top sheet.  Or find a way to make the board feel less dead underfoot.  If they did that I think we would probably prefer this over the standard model.  As it stands now I feel it just gave up too much to be damper.

If this review helped, we’d appreciate if you:

How can you review a board that is marketed as being more aggressive than the normal MT with Burton Genesis bindings on it. Mount some Cartels or another stiffer binding on it and that playfulness will be there. Soft bindings on a stiff board means you will have a seriously hard time making the board turn. Too bad. I was looking forward to a good review from you on this. but that basic mistake means that this review is not reliable.

Response: Walter White- It\'s a busy job making Meth and it seems you only had time to watch the video.. In the written review you can see it\'s been tested 4 days with 5 different bindings including the Burton Cartel, Burton Diode, Flux SF and Union Factory. You are also misunderstanding a bindings influence on a boards overall personality. What I have found is the more responsive bindings helped the Jones Mtn Twin LTD turn easier but none changed the overall personality as described in the review.
