Summary

The Gnu Swallow Tail Carver is new this year and a nice take on directional XC2 BTX to give it a tapered forgiving freeride feel. Not much has changed from 2016-2018 and this old review still stands.

Gnu Swallow Tail Carver 2018 - 2016 Review by The Good Ride

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  We do make money from the “Where To Buy” links, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average riders’ perspective.

Size: 157
Days:  1
Conditions: Pretty Hard Pac NW Snow
Riders: James
Boots:  Burton Fiend LTD
Bindings: Burton Cartel
Set Up: Set Back 15 front -3 Back approx 23″ wide

Approximate Weight: Felt normal

On Snow Feel: You could feel the stability of the XC2 BTX but it really feels a lot more like a pure powder board than a powder board that can also handle groomers really well.  It’s a good groomer board but not anywhere close to how I think it would be in powder.

Powder: No powder but you can just tell that with the setback, swallowtail and tapered shape that this will float like a champ.

Turn Initiation and Carving: Very quick and snappy edge to edge.

Speed: Not super fast but fast enough for some good mountain speed.

Uneven Terrain: I was surprised on how much uneven terrain bucked this board around and although I think it will be fine in powdery moguls it wasn’t that fun in harder uneven snow.

Edge Hold: Really mellow edge hold here and maybe the edges were de-tuned but it didn’t hold like other MTX boards I rode that day.

Flex: Nice snappy flex but it still allows you to get a good tail butter or nose press.

The rest doesn’t really matter.
