Summary

The Gentemstick Spoonfish 152 was a board I really liked when I tried it and after a few years, nothing has changed.  It isn't the best board for my size but it really lights up underfoot despite that and it makes for a very quick easy to turn with most stance angles/styles of riding and has much better float than I thought it would for someone with my specs. If you run a little shorter, lighter and have the same or smaller boot size the Gentemstick Spoonfish 152 could be a great daily driver.  If they had a larger size to fit bigger builds like mine, the Spoonfish is something I'd love to bring home and introduce to the rest of my quiver.

Gentemstick Spoonfish 152 Past Reviews

The Gentemstick Spoonfish was almost right there with the Mantaray as one of my favorite boards I tried from their line.  It’s one of those boards that doesn’t feel as far back on the tail or as small as it does when you ride it.  It’s also a surprisingly fun board for carving and slashing up groomers as well.  I could easily own this board and didn’t want to give it back.  The only issue is the narrow old school Freeride stance width. It’s widest width is shy of 22.5″ aka 57cm so for me with a 22.5″ to 23″ stance width I only had one set up option.  Nothing has changed from 2015-2017

Don’t know how I got Big Spoon in my head in the on the table review so disregard that.

Size:  152
Days:  4
Conditions:  All 4 days were the same. Hard to icy mornings, Medium snow late mornings fading into soft to slushers in the afternoon.
Riders: James
Boots: Burton Fiend LTD
Bindings: Burton Diode, Flux SFUnion Factory
Set Up: 15 front 0-3 back approx 22.5″ Wide with the Diodes and closer to 23″ with the SF and Factory because I could slide the bindings out wider.  Couldn’t with the ReFlex Discs on the Diode.

Approximate Weight: Felt normal, sturdy and strong.

On Snow Feel: So yeah this board is all about powder and I had no powder but man what a fun groomer board.  It’s got an almost full camber feel that didn’t feel washy so it’s a great board for going out and riding the mountain when it’s groomer time. You really don’t feel that far back on the table and it makes for a fun stable all conditions ride. It also rides bigger than it’s size. If I didn’t look at the size and went out with a blindfold on I’d crash but before I did I’d swear that this was a size 156-158.

Turn Initiation: You could feel all that camber in the turns and it has a springy fun to turn ride from short to wide radius turns. Like all the Gentemstick boards the Spoonfish does much better than you would think hitting the groomers and making a day out of it. It makes quick short radius turns very easy if you know the mechanics of turning.  It’s not for those that skid their turns but for those who turn correctly you will find this quick and easy on short radius turns and then you really feel the camber engage and spring out of the turn on medium to wider radius turns.  It’s also really fun to slash anything that looks like a wave all over the mountain. This is that kind of board that makes turning the experience where many boards make turning the thing you do till the next trick.

Flex:  Pretty stiff but still springy. Not super easy to lean back and butter off the tail but many people (especially old school camber riders) will like the extra work.

Edge Hold: Really impressive edge hold for a tapered set back swallow tail with a lot of taper. They have a very unique side cut going on that allows this board to feel way less washy than most boards of this shape I’ve tried.

Powder: No powder to speak of but I bet this would be super slashy quick in trees and still handle no problem a wide open bowl.  It floated over slush fine….ah what a shitty season.

Carving:  I liked carving on the Gentemstick Spoonfish almost as much as I liked carving on the Stingray. It really rails into a turn and put’s a smile to your face. Even your burning legs like it after you carved from first turn to last on a run.

Speed: This little 152 rides big for it’s size and it’s fine if you want to pick up some speed.

Uneven Terrain: It’s not soft and forgiving like the Giant Mantaray but it’s so small and quick that it’s easy to weave in and out of bumps or deal with messy end of the day powder or groomers.

Switch: Nah.

Jumps: All about the method and it’s a really poppy board.

Jibbing: Nope!

Pipe: You know like the Stingray I’d have no problem surfing the pipe on this board.  It would carve well wall to wall and it’s quick and easy to throw around.

So all in all I had a lot of fun on the Gentemstick Spoonfish 152 and it was almost as fun or as fun as the Mantaray which is one of my favorite Gentemstick boards.
