Summary

The Burton Nug Flying V is definitely a quiver board but what a fun quiver board.  If there was a quiver board favorite category this would be at the top.  Not much has changed from 2016-2015.

Burton Nug Flying V 2016 - 2014 Review by The Good Ride

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  We do make money from the “Where To Buy” links, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average riders’ perspective.

The 2016 Nug rides pretty similar to the 2014 except for a few things.

1. The board is now sold in all stores instead of just core shops.

2. It comes in a 154 for an extra mid/wide board for bigger riders.

3. It has a new scooped nose/tail that makes it look more like a spoon.  It’s not like Bataleon’s TBT because it’s only really around the top of the tip and tail where you butter. It starts right after the side effects extension right after the effective edge ends. It just makes an already great board for buttering better.

On Snow Feel: What a fun playful feel this board has.  It’s got feel that just a little bit better than boards with a healthy bit of continuous rocker.  It’s so small that when you stand on it the tip/tail press down and there is more of a stable feel than you would think. Still, it is more loose and playful bordering on semi-stable.

For 2016 the Burton Nug Flying V stands alone now.  However, The other Nugs from the past with Continuous or flat to rocker were fun but adding some camber into the mix really helped it pop. It kind of completes the ride and out of all the Nug boards, this was our favorite. Don’t get us wrong we liked the other Nugs but this was the one we all wanted to keep. This is a park expert but it’s pretty fun playing around on the mountain as well. Riding the 150 is a lot different from the 146 and it feels and acts like a much bigger board. It didn’t feel as playful and spinny as you would think for a 150 where the 146 felt very playful and spinny for me. These boards can do a decent job on the mountain as well but still live for a more freestyle kind of ride.

Powder: We didn’t have any real powder but what little soft snow patches we found in the trees were ok.  We were in thick sierra cement so that is about the biggest challenge you can have for powder. It’s better than you would think for a 146 but I’d much rather be on something longer.

Turn Initiation and Carving: Very quick and super easy to turn. It’s got a very loose.  It’s hands down the quickest/easiest of all the Flying V camber profiles in Burton’s line. Short radius to medium radius turns are quick and fun.  When laying into a carve the board is better than the rocker boards but not as good as the discontinued camber nug.

Speed: More speed than you think for such a small board but it’s still not a bomber.  Because everything is smaller it feels like the chatter is less pronounced than other hybrid rocker Burton boards and it has a decent feel cruising groomers at moderate speeds.

Uneven Terrain: Really easy handling a shitty crowded day full of uneven snow.  It’s small and easily maneuverable through bumps and ruts of all kinds. It’s not the best powering over bumps at higher speed but if you slow down it’s great.

Edge Hold: Same old Burton edge hold but it’s better than some hybrid shapes in the line.  When Peter, Jimbo and I rode it in good conditions it was good and felt like any other board but then I took it out again in harder snow and the edges started to slip in hard patches and didn’t make me feel confident. It’s better than previous years though and borders on being a middle ground.

Flex: Medium/Soft flex that is super playful and buttery. The 2015 is even more so.

Switch: Perfect switch just like it is regular.

Jibbing: It felt really confidence inspiring in the jib park and had that really good feel like the Lib Tech Box Scratcher. You feel like you want to try more and do more there. To all of us this could be a dedicated jib board.  The flat to rocker Nug is a little better here but it’s still not bad at all.

Pipe: This isn’t the best pipe board and I didn’t feel too comfortable in there when it was hard but I bet it would be fine in the spring.

Jumps: It’s pretty easy to spring into the air even without a Burton Hinge Tech binding. It popped well and felt stable enough approaching a kicker too. Of course, it makes it very easy to spin. With the Burton Hinge Tech like I tried with the Malavita EST the board had massive ollie power and it made me feel like I time traveled to the days before my many injuries. So it’s great with normal bindings and excellent with EST bindings.

All in all, this is a very fun quiver board that’s really fun when you are in a playful mood or want to learn new tricks.

Fun Quiver Board

Bindings: Burton Cartel

I just started riding this board this year in Tahoe. I was able to ride this in powder and packed snow. Since I already rode a smaller board with the TRS, the Nug felt right at home. As expected, it turns well and has decent flex. Its okay as an all mountain, but I wouldn't recommend this unless you have another board.

Pros:
This is a pretty fun park board. Since its much smaller than my regular board, I find that I can spin a lot easier. It jibs pretty well too. Spinning off side hits is great on this board. On a good condition day, this is a fun board that really encourages you to try new things.

Cons
In deep powder, this just can't compare to powder boards. I've had a few situations where I got stuck in deep powder. However, the major issue I have on this board is the poor edge hold. Coming from a Magna traction board, the Nug really doesn't have great edge hold on icy conditions. If it wasn't for the edge hold issue, I would ride this as my all mountain board.

This is, by far, the best board I have ever ridden. Initially, I was slightly worried that there would be too much flex and not enough stability, but the Nug Flying V flexes when enjoying some stylish buttering, and stable when lining up for a kicker or carving some downhills; the board really demonstrates the best of both worlds. Not only a killer board for All-Mountain Freestyle, but slashes in the park with any size feature and for any experience level rider. Truly a must have board for riders wanting one board for all of their riding.
