686 Plexus Plasma 2013 Review by The Good Ride

The 686 Plexus Plasma is a good low-cost shell with pretty good waterproofing.    Its a good pair of pants with one unique thing that some might or might not like.  It has an extra waist gaiter to allow you to get saggy or have more protection on a powder day.

Ethics Statement: We don’t get paid by the manufacturer to write these reviews.  No one is perfect and we do make money from the “Where To Buy” links below, but this is our best attempt at an honest and objective review from an average riders’ perspective.

Size Tried: Medium
James’ Specs:
Height: 5’10”,
Weight: 195 lbs,
Waist 33”
Hips 42”
Inseam 30”
Upper Thigh 24.5”
Middle Thigh 22”
Calves 17”
Turn On’s: Size M pants that fit well around my thighs, Riding with Friends, Open Roads, new gear and especially my wife.
Turn Off’s: M Pants that I can’t get up over my thighs, traffic, and people who can’t park inside the lines.

Fit: I’m personally a big fan of 686’s fit and found that their pants always accommodate my body type as well as many others really well.  There is always room for layering and even though these are a little on the lighter side of normal there is still room.

Construction: 686 makes clothes that last a while.  I’ve owned pants of theirs for 2 80+ day seasons and they always held up without the seems coming off.

Insulation/Warmth:

Waterproofing: We have always found 686’s waterproof rating to be a little exaggerated but it doesn’t mean it’s.  With all 686 pants I’ve owned I felt like I had to re-waterproof the outer layer a little more than other outerwear I owned but not by too much more. Seems like it will be fine for wet snow but not really a bomb-proof solution for people that see a lot of really wet snow to rainy weather.

Breathability: Felt like normal breathability.  Nothing bad and nothing great.  You know just normal.

Overall: Not a bad pant for the price.
